Dwindling TV ratings for MTV VMAs

Beyonce won several awards at Sunday's VMAs

The 2016 MTV Music Video Awards may have generated huge media coverage, but the excitement didn't translate to TV ratings.

The show, which was broadcast on August 28, attracted 34 percent fewer viewers the last year, the New York Times reports, dropping from 9.8 million to 6.5 million.

Broadcast live from Madison Square Garden in New York, the ceremony was beamed onto 11 different channels through MTV's parent company Viacom, with millions tuning in to check out the show, featuring performances from Beyonce, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.

Despite the slump in TV figures, MTV said that online streaming figures had increased by 70 percent since last year, with 62.8 million viewers.
