New Downtown Line MRT station to open ahead of schedule in Feb
Another new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station will welcome commuters from Feb 2025. It’s Hume MRT, situated on the blue Downtown Line (DTL).
According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Hume MRT station is scheduled to open to the public at 3pm on 28 Feb. The opening has been brought forward from its original opening date set for the second quarter of 2025.
Sitting on Upper Bukit Timah Road, Hume MRT Station is located between Hillview and Beauty World stations. Minister for Transport Chee Hong Ta reported that the station will allow residents of Hume Avenue to travel to the city centre with increased convenience.
“For example, a resident travelling from Hume Station to Downtown station will take around 30 minutes, down from about 45 minutes previously,” Mr Chee said on his Facebook page.
Travelling to attractions such as the Former Ford Factory and the Rail Corridor shall also be easier for commuters.
Hume MRT will be the 35th working station on the DTL. Its station box was completed as part of DTL’s second phase and works to fit it as an operational station were finalised in Jan 2021. Singapore Bus Services (SBS) Transit shall be testing the service as the operator to ensure it is suitable for passenger use.
Two entrances, one facing Upper Bukit Timah Road and another facing Hume Avenue will service the new station. Sheltered linkways have been constructed to provide coverage to nearby bus stops, drop-off and pick-up points, along with 60 bicycle parking lots.
The station also possesses environmentally friendly features, including a solar panel rooftop, a hybrid cooling system and energy-efficient lighting.
With Hume MRT opening, the LTA grows a step closer to achieving its goal of 8 in 10 households being within a 10-minute walk of a train station by the 2030s.
Plans to expand the network to provide more accessibility and convenience in commuter transport are still underway. This includes connecting the DTL to the Thomson-East Coast Line and North-South Line, scheduled to be completed in 2026 and 2035 respectively.
