Dolly Parton Comes for "Becky With the Good Hair" on Beyoncé's New Album
Dolly Parton is out here dragging "Becky With the Good Hair" on Beyoncé's new album Cowboy Carter.
Dolly provided an intro for Bey's cover of her iconic song "Jolene," saying “Hey miss Honey B, it’s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sang about? Reminding me of someone I knew about back when. Reminding me of someone I knew back when, except she has flaming locks of auburn hair, bless her heart. Just a hair of a different color but it hurts just the same.”
As a reminder, Jolene is based on a woman at the bank who had the audacity to flirt with Dolly's husband. As she put it to NPR in 2008, "She got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us—when I was saying, 'Hell, you're spending a lot of time at the bank. I don't believe we've got that kind of money.' So it's really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one."
Meanwhile, "Becky With the Good Hair" is mentioned on Beyonce's Lemonade track "Sorry," when Bey sings "He only want me when I'm not there/ He better call Becky with the good hair / He better call Becky with the good hair."
At the time, these lyrics caused the internet to meltdown about exactly who "Becky With the Good Hair" is, with theories ranging from Rita Ora to Rachel Roy (both of them have denied being Becky, fwiw!). Eventually, “Sorry” cowriter Diana Gordon was asked about Becky theories by Entertainment Weekly and said, "I laughed, like this is so silly. Where are we living? I was like, 'What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information?' Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?"
