Disney Confirms Timeline, Theater, New Creatives for Broadway ‘Frozen’
It’s official: Tony Award-winning British director Michael Grandage will direct Disney’s Broadway musical adaptation of “Frozen,” which is on track to open on Broadway in spring 2018 at the St. James Theater.
As early word indicated late last week, Grandage signs on to “Frozen” with his longtime collaborator Christopher Oram, who’ll design the sets and costumes for the big-budget musical. Grandage steps into a post left vacant when Disney Theatrical Productions decided to part ways with Alex Timbers, who had initially been tapped to stage “Frozen.” Also exiting the production is previously announced designer Bob Crowley.
With new team members joining a year before the production’s scheduled world premiere, it hadn’t been clear whether Disney would stick to its original timeline for “Frozen.” With the official confirmation of Grandage and Oram, Disney has also confirmed that the show remains on track to bow at Denver Center for the Performing Arts in August 2017, prior to a Broadway engagement due to begin in spring 2018 at the St. James.
The St. James had long been widely understood as the future home of “Frozen,” but the official announcement couldn’t be made until the venue’s current tenant, “Something Rotten!,” had set its closing date.
Exact Broadway dates for “Frozen” have not yet been set, nor has any casting.
