Dior Channels Frida Kahlo in New Cruise Campaign
PORTRAIT OF A LADY: The spirit of Frida Kahlo seems to gaze out of the images of Dior’s latest campaign, out Saturday, as if from the Mexican artist’s self-portraits.
The label’s latest campaign showcases its Kahlo-inspired cruise collection, which was unveiled in May at the Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City — where the feminist artist met Diego Rivera when she was a high school student.

Dior’s artistic director of womenswear Maria Grazia Chiuri has long been an avid admirer of the feminist icon, and she tasked Brigitte Niedermair to shoot and art direct the campaign for the collection, with styling by Elin Svahn.
Against the simplistic backdrop of earth-hued walls with surrealist floral decorative elements, models Celic Dörig, Ana Oliveira, Sara Caballero and Maryel Uchida stare out intensely.
The images create a play on symmetrical pairs or show one of the models reflected in a mirror. “These images embody the strength of the collective, the resilience and the pride of women, of Mexican artists,” stated Dior.
The designs featured highlight the dialog created in the collection itself between Dior’s workshops and Mexican artisans, with whom Chiuri worked for her latest cruise offering.
Makeup for the campaign is by Peter Philips, while Guido Palau styled hair.
The brand has strong ties with Mexico, a country celebrated many times by Christian Dior himself, starting with his first collection, which featured a dress called Mexico.
Among the designs featured in the images, the full skirts are worn with traditional huipils and structured jackets adorned with guipure embellishments created hand-in-hand with local craftspeople. Accessories like the Lady Dior bag are seen, embossed with botanical motifs, while the jewelry pieces feature butterflies that appear to have just alighted on the models’ hands, arms and necks.
