Designated Survivor: Virginia Madsen Joins ABC's Kiefer Sutherland Drama

Kiefer Sutherland hasn’t even been sworn in yet, and he already has a challenger for the office of President of the United States — in Virginia Madsen.

In the freshman ABC drama Designated Survivor (premiering Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c), 24 alum Sutherland plays Tom Kirkman, a lowly Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who, as the “designated survivor” during the State of the Union Address, finds himself next in line to occupy the Oval Office following a terrorist attack on the Capitol.

Per our sister site Deadline, Madsen (who is currently playing the family matriarch on CBS’ American Gothic) will heavily recur on the series as — and boy is this a name! —Kimble Hookstraten, the “designated survivor” from the rival political party. A conservative Congresswoman, she throws her support to Kirkman… for now, while harboring a quite different true agenda.
