Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has been left in awe after finding out that legendary Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese watches the show.

McGee retweeted a clip of the iconic filmmaker being asked what TV series or movies he is watching lately.

Scorsese responded: "I watched the other night, Derry Girls." His response was greeted with loud cheers and applause before Scorsese humorously added: "Those nuns!"

In her tweet, the astonished McGee wrote: "Excuse me while I drop dead and actually die a death."

She wasn't the only celebrity to be bowled over by Scorsese's reception of her work. One Day author and Patrick Melrose screenwriter David Nicholls tweeted McGee, writing: "Oh my God! The dream. Congratulations, Lisa!"

Meanwhile, comedian Dara Ó Briain added: "And that’s it, you win. Shut it down, people, we have a winner."

Derry Girls ended earlier this year after three successful seasons that garnered a BAFTA nomination for Best Scripted Comedy. Actress Nicola Coughlan, who played Clare Devlin, admitted in June that she hadn't watched the finale despite it airing in May.

"You know what, I haven't watched the finale yet, because I was in LA when it came out," Coughlan said before speaking about how hard it was for the show to end.

"That day, I just cried and cried because it felt like such an ending of an era. It's been five years of my life. It was such a huge job for me to get and people connected with it so much, so I'm holding on to watch it."

When the finale did air in May, McGee explained how COVID affected her original version of the last episode and just how different it could have been.

"[The episode] would have been [different] before our dates were pushed because of COVID," McGee said.

"There was a version of this that was just funny-funny, and the party and the Good Friday Agreement – it was just your typical Derry Girls, where they were like: 'This is hugely annoying', and there was no Michelle and Erin story."

Derry Girls is available to stream on All4.
