Denise Ho calls for UN to put more pressure on China

9 Jul – Hong Kong singer-activist Denise Ho recently called upon the international community to increase pressure on China, for the alleged serious attack of human rights and democracy in Hong Kong.

As reported on SCMP, the singer, who was invited to speak at a meeting of the 41st session of the UN rights council in Geneva by the United Nations' Watch and the Human Rights Foundation on 8 July, stated that the human rights in Hong Kong is seriously under attack over the government's bid to introduce the extradition bill.

It is noted that the bill, if passed, will enable the transfer of suspects and fugitives to any jurisdiction with which the city lacks a formal extradition treaty, which includes mainland China.

"Will the United Nations convene an urgent session to protect the people of Hong Kong?" she asked the council, and urged the UN to remove China from the UN Human Rights Council.

Denise was also interrupted twice during her short speech by the Chinese diplomat, accusing her of groundlessly attacking the "one country, two systems" arrangement.

In related news, Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam recently announced that the bill is dead, adding that the work to amend the bill was a complete failure.
