Daniel Lee, Sarah Lucas Host Dinner at St. John During Frieze London

OCTOBER FEAST: The worlds of fashion, celebrity, contemporary art, and design collided on Thursday night at St. John in Clerkenwell at a family-style dinner hosted by Burberry’s chief creative officer Daniel Lee and artist Sarah Lucas.

They were celebrating the opening of “Happy Gas,” Lucas’ new show at Tate Britain, which Burberry is supporting. Lee is a longtime fan of Lucas’ work, and the sponsorship is part of Burberry’s ongoing strategy to amplify British art.

Since he arrived at Burberry, Lee has been celebrating British culture every which way, and Thursday night was no exception.

The company took over St. John, across from Smithfield meat market, draped the chairs with bright blue plaid blankets, and served up a host of local specialties the Brits have been eating for centuries.

Guests dined on crusty bread, beetroot, bone marrow, Jerusalem artichoke, fish pie and Eton mess, all of which was served family style alongside a never-ending flow of St. John’s house wine.

It was certainly a departure from the offer at Norman’s, the north London café that’s working with Burberry on its Streets installations. There the fare is simpler: eggs, chips, beans and buns.

Norman’s is currently serving up those dishes in Seoul as part of the Burberry Streets project that will run until Nov. 5. Streets will open in Shanghai later this month and later move on to New York.

The Frieze art fair, which runs until Sunday, has been proving resilient against a challenging economic and political backdrop. Galleries including Gagosian, Carl Freedman and the Night Gallery said buyers were snapping up works within hours of the fair opening on Wednesday for VIP guests.
