Dan Aykroyd paid a tear-jerking tribute to Carrie Fisher at memorial
Friends and family of the late Carrie Fisher assembled at the weekend, to pay tribute to the screen legend, who died last Christmas.
But the most tear-jerking, bitter-sweet eulogy came from Dan Aykroyd, who was at one time engaged to Fisher, after proposing on the set of ‘The Blues Brothers’.
“I felt like I could’ve saved Carrie, because I saved her life once before,” he told the audience at the joint memorial for Fisher and her mother, the actress Debbie Reynolds, who died the day after her daughter.
“We shouldn’t be here so soon in our lives.
“I once saved her life, applying the Heimlich [manoeuvre] to dislodge a brussels sprout from her throat,” he then joked.
“If I’d been with our beloved showboat, I might have been able to save her again.”
Fisher died four days after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles, on December 17, 2016.
She was 60.
Aykroyd went on to describe her as ‘Funny, quick, spiritual, haunted, pursued, talented, acerbic… deviant, manic genius’.
He had always held a torch for Fisher, writing an essay in Empire magazine following her death.
“Contemplating marriage, I gave Carrie a sapphire ring,” he wrote.
“Subsequently in the romance she gave me a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil, which I kept for years until it began to frighten my children.
“She was also in love with Paul Simon. She married him but I hope she kept my ring.”
