Daiso Singapore, the popular Japanese chain known for its $2 household products, will charge the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all purchases from 1 May.

Daiso has placed notices at its outlets, such as at the ION Orchard and Tampines 1 malls, to inform customers of the impending price change.

One notice thanking customers for their support reads, “We always strive to keep prices as affordable as possible. To continue improving the quality of our products, there will be a price change. All prices will be exclusive of GST from 1 May 2022.”

A check on the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore’s website shows that Daiso, which has 29 stores across Singapore, has been a GST-registered business since 1 April 2019.

Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore has reached out to Daiso Singapore for comments regarding the GST charge on its products.

Singapore's Finance Minister Lawrence Wong had announced during his Budget speech in February that the city-state's GST will be raised from next year, and it will be staggered out in two steps: from 7 to 8 per cent on 1 January 2023, and from 8 to 9 per cent on 1 January 2024.
