‘The Crown': Princess Diana’s Fight to Break Free Sends the Royal Family Into Crisis Mode in Stormy Season 5 Trailer (Video)

The highly anticipated trailer for Season 5 of “The Crown” has arrived at long last, weeks before its Nov. 9 premiere.

The new season of the award-winning Netflix drama will see an all-new cast – the third generation of actors in the show’s history – ascend to the British royal family. Imelda Staunton takes over Olivia Colman’s Emmy-winning role of Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce plays Prince Philip, and Lesley Manville is Princess Margaret, with Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.

The new season finds the monarchy on the brink of personal and political crisis in the early 1990s. The trailer opens with various news reports speculating about whether or not the royal family will survive the brewing storm surrounding the increasingly public breakdown of Diana and Charles’ marriage.

“The House of Windsor should be binding the nation together, setting an example of idealized family life,” a man’s voice says as newspaper headlines and tense shots of Charles, Diana, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip flash by. “It’s a situation that cannot help but affect the stability of the country.”

The unhappy couple’s pursuit of a divorce – an unprecedented event in British royal history – ramps up conflicts between the Queen and her son. Meanwhile, Diana struggles with loneliness and the relentless media scrutiny as Charles continues to see Camilla Parker-Bowles (Olivia Williams). “People will never understand how it’s really been for me,” Diana says.

Like her estranged husband and mother-in-law, Diana and Prince Charles also butt heads over duty versus happiness. “Remember the one condition, the one rule: You remain loyal to this family,” Charles tells Diana. “You mean silent?” she counters, to which he replies: “It’s a system, for better or for worse. We’re all stuck in it.”

The trailer also reveals the first footage of Diana’s iconic “revenge dress,” previously seen in photos from the set. Allusions to political unrest and the monarchy’s weaking hold over its empire are made through glimpses of violence and destruction. “How did it come to this?” the Queen asks.

Season 5 also stars Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne, Jonny Lee Miller as John Major, Salim Daw as Mohamed Al Fayed, and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.

Creator Peter Morgan directed all 10 episodes and executive produces alongside Suzanne Mackie, Andy Harries, Stephen Daldry, Matthew Byam Shaw, Robert Fox and Jessica Hobbs.
