Season two of crime thriller The Bridge has been released on Viu and HBO Asia, and the show promises more intrigue and action.

The Bridge 2 stars Rebecca Lim, Bront Palarae and Ario Bayu as the lead cops, who join a host of other Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipino cast members including Cheryl Samad, Wan Hanafi Su, Izzat Mushtaq, Miller Khan and Joseph Marco.

Directors TJ Lee and Jason Chong returned to join Zahir Omar for the second outing of The Bridge, which is based on the 2011 Danish-Swedish original series.

Producer Min Lim said at a press conference to launch the show on 15 June (Monday) that the story for this season is an original one, created specifically for the Asian remake.

The first season in 2018 centred on a gruesome double murder that required the collective detective work of investigators from Singapore and Malaysia. For the second season, the setting has been expanded to include Indonesia.

The story picks up a year after season one. A yacht registered in Singapore drifts ashore in Johor with a deceased Indonesian family on board. Investigating the subsequent slew of serial killings, the characters become mired in a web of treachery, deceit and personal tragedy. Darker and more twisted than before, the season features themes of corruption, redemption and revenge against a distinctly Asian underworld backdrop.

Rebecca Lim said her character Serena Teo is the “most badass character” she had ever played in her career. “I thought that season one was already pushing the boundaries, but season two was way more than what I expected,” she added.

Bront Palarae, who plays Megat Jamil, said his character got to spend more time with new characters this season, making for “a breath of fresh air”. “I think the audience will get to see a new Megat,” he said.

Each episode of the 10-episode season will be released weekly in all of Viu and HBO Asia’s markets, including territories in Asia, the Middle East and South Africa.
