“Crazy rental hike” forces local actress Irene Ang to close 4.7-stars Soi Candy, on 30 Jul 2023

It’s very unfortunate that the Singapore F&B industry continues to be rocked by closures even after the lockdowns have ended. One of the most common reasons we hear from business owners is skyrocketing rental prices. That curse has hit one of the most beloved Thai restaurants around, Soi Candy.

Soi Candy has a ridiculously-high 4.7 rating and is owned by Singaporean actress Irene Ang. It will cease operations on 30 Jul 2023.

This news may take many folks off-guard, considering its rating of 4.7 stars comes from over 200 enthusiastic reviews. The secret to Soi Candy’s popularity is its unique menu of Northern Thai dishes rather than the usual Thai fare we see.

Soi Candy closing — Storefront

The reasoning given behind the closure is due to the “crazy rental hike”, as quoted in their saddening announcement on Instagram. Just upon renewal of their rental agreement, Irene and her team realised that it would not be feasible to continue operating at their current location in Chinatown.

This is not the first time where high rent has led to the closure of a popular eatery, with this nameless bak chor mee stall and famous pie hawker stall DP Creations suffering the same fate. With all these closures happening, it is obvious that rent is a crucial issue when it comes to F&B businesses.

Soi Candy closing — Goodbye Post

The post went on to thank folks for their support all this while, and invites customers to visit one final time before Soi Candy’s closure on 30 Jul 2023.

However, there is still hope. Seeing as they hope to bring customers Soi Candy’s “next chapter”, it’s safe to assume that there are future plans left for this Thai eatery as of now.

I am sure customers will miss their classic Basil Minced Pork with Sunny Side Up (S$10.90), that comes with a choice of 3 carbs — Rice, Two-Toned Noodles and Egg Noodles. With customisable spice levels, even the spice-intolerant will not miss out.

So, before Soi Candy has their final curtain call in Chinatown, be sure to swing by to enjoy their goodies before it’s gone!
