The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is upon us again and while anxious parents are hyping their children up, encouraging them to study harder, or perhaps, arranging extra tuition, former Mediacorp actress Jacelyn Tay has some interesting advice for her son.

Never compromise on eating, sleeping, and well, bodily functions, Tay wrote in her Instagram post published Wednesday (23 Aug).

The 48-year-old reiterated, “I don't care if it is PSLE or million dollar project. When it is time to eat, sh— and sleep, you better put down everything and go do these three. The rest can wait.”

To be fair, that’s not the only pearl of wisdom she shared with her son, Zavier. Her main point was to encourage him to focus on his purpose in life instead of achievements.

She explained, “If everything you do is for achieving something, you'll be disappointed cos not every time you get what you aim to achieve, be it exams, popular school, titles or wealth. Worse, we are often told to aim higher than what we can achieve. That gives unnecessary stress.”

However, if one focuses on their purpose, they “might last longer in this race”.

“We come to earth to develop our gifts and fulfil our calling. People who focus on achievement are easily stressed out, depressed, frustrated, angry, jealous, anxious, fearful, and eventually give up hope, ceasing what they are trying to achieve,” added Tay.

Tay also said that achievements will follow when you focus on developing yourself and your talents.

That’s because a person who focuses on what he loves will inherently work hard at it and improvements will come. Each little improvement is also a little achievement, she pointed out.

“Mama only believes in nurturing what nature has given you. If we force something upon the kid, it is not called nurture, it becomes a torture,” she concluded.

Oh, and as for that unglamorous photo, Tay said she’s a “crazy mama” who is sacrificing her image to entertain those who are stressed out.
