Cowgirl’s Last Ride is the latest production from Susan Cartsonis and Suzanne Farwell, the producers behind films such as What Women Want and The Holiday. The pair will produce with their Resonate Entertainment partner Brent Emery, with whom they made the recent Amazon pic Sitting In Bars With Cake. The screenplay was penned by Kris Hunt.

Film’s synopsis reads: We follow an unorthodox retired Texas cowgirl named Fay (Davis), who after battling against the negligent staff of her Dallas nursing home, escapes in a pickup truck on a journey towards her native East Texas where her more conventional son Randall (McNairy) is planning to sell her old home. Randall, besides himself with worry, sets off in hot pursuit, his wife and children all concerned by this family upheaval. Along her way, Fay starts to revisit the memories and people from her vibrant past; an extraordinary encounter with fellow maverick Cali (Scott), an impactful turning point. This ride of rediscovery leads her to reconnect with the woman she once was, reclaiming her identity as she ditches the pickup truck for a proper horse.

With a duffle bag and an oxygen tank secured to the saddle, Fay avoids the blare of police sirens and gallops through storms to make her way back to her former home, intent on preserving the last remnants of her lost past and reconnecting with her family, the only way she knows how.

“Collaborating with the producers of some of the greatest female-driven films of all time and getting Geena Davis back into the saddle of a big kick-ass role, is truly exciting,” said Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films.

“This is a team who will deliver a magical ride of a film for a broad audience, one that will make you laugh, cry, and think about the meaning of family.”

Resonate Entertainment added: “We founded Resonate Entertainment to tell truly entertaining, inclusive and original stories from a female perspective. With brilliant talent like Geena in the lead and Leena holding the reins creatively, Cowgirl’s Last Ride is right in that lane and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this story to life.”

All the actors were attached prior to SAG-AFTRA’s strike against the studios.
