Of Course Netflix Renewed Ryan Murphy's 'Monster'Netflix

Expanding his burgeoning true crime empire, Ryan Murphy and Netflix announced via Deadline that they plan to expand Monster beyond the murders of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer alone. Following the show's unprecedented success, Netflix has renewed the Monster franchise as an anthology series for two additional seasons that will "tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society." No further information regarding potential plot or casting has been announced just yet. Our money's on Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy.

Since its debut in late September, DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story cracked the Nielsen Top 10 for the biggest streaming weeks ever recorded. Murphy is also behind several other franchises, including American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Fox's 9-1-1. His other most recent hit, The Watcher—which ran on Netflix simultaneously with Monster—was the only show to dethrone the Dahmer series, after it spent three weeks at No. 1. The true crime thriller about a family terrorized by horrifying suburban letters was also renewed for a second season.

Monster starred longtime Murphy favorite Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer in the latest retelling of the famous serial killer's crimes from the perspective of his victims. Controversially, Murphy stated last week that not a single source that they reached out responded to them during pre-production of the series. The Watcher, which is based on a real suburban horror story, also took some significant creative liberties to up the drama.

"Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher," stated Bela Bajaria, Head of Global TV at Netflix, in the official press release. "The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes."

There you have it, folks. Like it or not, we have two new Monster and Watcher universes.
