Connie Nielsen Cast As Wonder Woman’s Mother

Warner Bros/DC’s in-production ‘Wonder Woman’ solo movie has at last found its Hippolyta - and it’s Connie Nielsen.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Nielsen, best known for her role in ‘Gladiator,’ will portray the Amazon Queen of the mystical island Themyscira, mother of Gal Gadot’s title character.

Nicole Kidman had initially been in talks for the role, but was unable to fit it into her schedule - and there were reports Robin Wright, cast in the film in an as-yet undisclosed role, was being considered to take on that part instead.

Since ‘Gladiator,’ Nielsen’s film work has included roles in ‘One Hour Photo,’ 'Nymphomaniac Vol 1’ and ‘3 Days To Kill’ as well as recurring roles on TV’s ‘Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,’ ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘The Following.’

The 50 year old Danish actress now joins Gadot, Wright, Chris Pine as love interest Steve Trevor, and a supporting cast including David Thewlis, Danny Huston and Ewen Bremner, in what will be the first major female-centred superhero movie of the decade.

While Gadot will make her debut as the original superheroine this spring in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ it is believed this solo film from director Patty Jenkins will be at least in part a prequel set during World War 1.

Pine recently confirmed as much in an interview with the Toronto Sun, describing his character as a “rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization.”

Pine also heaps praise on his director: “Patty is just directing the daylights out of it. It’s shot beautifully feels so wonderfully period, but also has this wonderful pop sensibility.”

Currently shooting in the UK and Italy, ‘Wonder Woman’ is set to hit screens in June 2017.

Before that, we can meet the superheroine in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ in cinemas 25 March.
