How comedian Gadiel Del Orbe uses his Dominican heritage to connect with fans: “I want people to be seen”

Dominican-American comedian and content creator Gadiel Del Orbe (@gadieldelorbe) uses his Latino background as inspiration for his viral moments.

“New York Dominicans have impacted culture drastically, and I feel like we are people that are not seen as much,” Gadiel says.

As someone who was always comedic, from his time as a childhood “class clown” to keeping others laughing while in the Navy, it made sense for Gadiel to embark on a career in stand-up comedy. This eventually evolved into sharing videos of his content online, which Gadiel says “blew up” his career.

Gadiel’s life directly inspires his comedy — his family, culture and everyday experiences. He says he’s always been proud of who he is and where he comes from, so his mission is to share that enthusiasm with others.

“The thing about my work that makes me the most proud is when people enjoy themselves,” Gadiel says, sharing that he appreciates comments from fans telling him his content is relatable.

“I wanted to represent people that are hardly seen,” he explains.

Gadiel’s advice to others wanting to get into a career as a stand-up comedy is to simply get up and do it. “A lot of the time we overthink things and we think our way out of things. And the only way to get something done is by doing it.
