Add some rustic charm to your home with these antique-inspired pieces.
Modern farmhouse style can be divisive—you either love it or you hate it. However, there's a closely related home decor trend that seems to be meeting more people in the middle: English country style. While modern farmhouse style is often accented by more industrial elements, high-contrast black-and-white decor, and clean lines, English country style tends to be a bit softer around the edges. It's characterized by exposed wood, rustic antiques, quaint ceramics, a bit of cozy clutter, and, often, a pitcher filled with fresh-cut flowers on the counter. You can find it in the home interiors featured in almost any Nancy Meyers movie. And you can also find it in the latest summer collection from Joanna Gaines' Magnolia brand.
While Gaines played a big role in popularizing and defining modern farmhouse style as we know it (thanks to her and her husband Chip's HGTV show Fixer Upper), her new Magnolia collection seems to lean more toward English country or cottage style. The curated 2023 Summer Collection includes everything from large ceramic vases to striped linen bedding to Impressionism-style still life artwork. If you're looking to give your home a slowed-down, antique-inspired refresh, find some of our favorite items from the recent Magnolia collection below.
Maison Striped Mixing Bowl Set of Two
These ceramic mixing bowls will transport you back to Grandma's kitchen, in the best way possible. The set is made of sturdy stoneware featuring striped detailing and a crackle glaze that that gives the bowls an aged look.
Hannon Wood and Brass Display Shelf
Open shelving is a common characteristic of English country kitchens. This wood and brass display shelf offers three tiers for storing spices, dishware, and knick knacks, along with a hook rack for hanging utensils, mugs, or tea towels.
San Miguel Pitcher
If you're trying to evoke English country style at home, a ceramic pitcher is a foolproof way to start. Part of the San Miguel Collection, this pitcher includes floral motifs originally hand painted by artist Shaina Page, which were then printed onto each piece.
Terra-Cotta Gingham Tablecloth
Red gingham is a quintessential summertime print and it never goes out of style. Whether you're hosting an outdoor dinner party with friends or heading to have a picnic in the park, this tablecloth is the perfect backdrop.
San Miguel Brass Wall Hooks
Brass plus ceramics: an English country style match made in heaven. These hooks can be used anywhere—the bathroom, mudroom, entryway, bedroom, wherever—and they are equal parts charming and practical.
Shadow Grey + Oatmeal Stripe Linen Cotton Duvet
Linen is an ideal material for evoking a slow, cozy atmosphere at home—and this striped linen cotton duvet is just calling for prolonged mornings in bed. The material looks instantly lived-in and the neutral stripes are a great canvas for subtle pattern mixing with printed pillows or throws.
Sage Green Speckled Vase
This speckled vase is another perfect vessel for flowers or for displaying empty on a shelf or coffee table. It comes in both a short and wide and a tall and skinny version, and the sage green speckled glaze adds a soft pop of color.
Archer Medicine Cabinet
A quick and easy way to refresh your bathroom is by swapping out the generic medicine cabinet for something with a bit more charm. Though the Archer Medicine Cabinet is simple in design, the antique brass finish and arched top provide a vintage appeal while also providing hidden storage to clear up counter space.
