7 Aug – CJ Villavicencio, the winner of the online talent show "The Pop Stage" has denied allegations that he plagiarised the musical, "Ang Huling El Bimbo".
As reported on Inquirer, Villavicencio who won P1 million in cash and a year contract with Viva Artists Agency for his performance of Eraserheads' medley, clarified the issue recently, after musical director Myke Salomon and Eraserhead's own Ely Buendia accused him of ripping off the musical.
He posted on Facebook that he had been receiving hate online since the allegation was made, adding that it also hurt him that he had unintentionally hurt some people as well, especially the production team of Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical.
Calling his finals performance a tribute to his favourite artists and musical while also incorporating his own story and experiences, Villavicencio stated, "There was no intention whatsoever on my part to plagiarise. I am sorry if I caused undue distress, seemed disrespectful or if I have hurt the theatre community."
"Clearly, as an amateur and aspiring artist, I still have so many things to learn. I humbly ask for everyone's understanding as I navigate this new world that I have recently entered. I am not a bad person. My intentions were far different from what people think," he continued.
At the same time, the young singer also thanked the support from his new management and the people behind "The Pop Stage" for the life-changing opportunity.
"In this time of uncertainty, may we all have the heart to spread love among humanity," he added.
