Christopher Walken's Papa Pumpkin Is My New Favorite Halloween Mascot

Comedy legend Christopher Walken made a surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live! this past weekend. Dressed as the Spirit of Halloween for the cold open, he helped President Joe Biden (Mikey Day) understand the true meaning of the upcoming holiday. "In South America, they call me Papa Pumpkin," he joked. "I don't know, maybe, I've never been." Celebrating the Halloween episode with an appearance from the king of spooky behavior? Well done, SNL.

The joke continues as Walken teaches "the Halloween way" to the President, citing "spooky goblins, creepy crawlers, hocus pocus, and camaraderie." According to Papa Pumpkin, it's the one day a year that you "meet the neighbors you don't want to see on any other day." The Academy Award-winning Pulp Fiction and Catch Me If You Can actor was overdue for another appearance on the sketch series. He last hosted SNL in 2008.

Following Walken's surprise cameo, various social media accounts resurfaced videos from his hilarious introduction of the Foo Fighters back in 2003. As Dave Grohl recounts, Walken reportedly asked him backstage if the emphasis was on "Foo" or "Fighters" in their band name. Knowing how Walken would naturally say it, Grohl told him emphasize "Fighters." Luckily for Walken, SNL gave him chance for redemption—and he nailed the pronunciation while introducing "Rescued." Walken's next film appearance will be in Dune: Part Two, on March 15, 2024. Until then, enjoy some poetry from Papa Pumpkin. Hopefully we see him again next Halloween.
