Christmas 2022: Deck the halls with the 10 best Christmas desserts this year

Cakes, cookies, chocolate, cream and Christmas! After all the discipline you’ve practiced this year, it’s finally time to indulge. Here are the 10 best sweet treats and Christmas desserts from across the island, compiled in one place.

Beware, my friends, severe temptation lies ahead!

1. Pistachio Cherries Nougat Log Cake (Dolcetto@Regent Singapore)

What better place for a taste of la dolce vita than Dolcetto at Regent Singapore? This authentic artisanal Italian bakery and gourmet mercatino‘s festive desserts are a wonder of culinary and artistic creativity.

Topping our list is the tricolour Pistachio Cherries Nougat Log Cake (S$78 for Medio, S$148 for Grande) inspired by the Italian flag. It contains two inherently Italiano ingredients: pistachio and Amarena cherries. Rich and creamy nougat mousse, fluffy pistachio sponge, tart cherry confit and whipped pistachio ganache, all in one bite? Truly la dolce vitta!

Chocolate is always the safe bet but the Chocolate Caramel Hazelnut Log Cake (S$72 for Medio, S$138 for Grande) is an especially decadent choice. Dolcetto’s rendition of this Christmas classic has silky smooth Guanaja dark chocolate mousse around a rich caramel crème brûlée centre, all sitting on a crunchy praline feulletine base.

Red alert! For a flurry of disparate but complementary flavours, watch out for the Lime Cream Cheese and Apple Log Cake (S$72 for Medio, S$138 for Grande). Its light almond lime sponge, tangy lime curd shortbread and soft cream cheese mousse make for a trio of irresistibly delicious flavours in one.

2. Festive Afternoon Tea Set (Conrad Centennial Singapore)

The Conrad’s famed Afternoon Tea gets a Christmas makeover to become the Festive Afternoon Tea, which you can enjoy at their Lobby Lounge and The Terrace, or have delivered straight to your home.

Some of these creations are (almost!) too intricate and artistic to eat. This includes Santa’s Hat (Evocao 72% Whole Fruit Chocolate Mousse) and Sacher and Manjari Ganache Christmas Tree (Yuzu Curd, Azuki Bean and Matcha Mousse). Equally enticimg are Candy Cane (Strawberry Mousse, Wild Strawberry Compôte, Yogurt Crémeux) and Little Baubles (Cassis Crémeux, Milk Chocolate Cassis Mousse and Sacher and Manjari Ganache).

No high tea is complete without scones and there are both Classic Scones and Raisin Scones, served the traditional way accompanied by Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam.

There is also a savoury selection in this set. It includes Duck Rillette with Homemade Piquillo Marmalade, Homemade Basil Cream and cheeses on Tartlet, Skewer of Duo Bread with Smoked Salmon, Avruga Caviar, and Prosciutto Ham on Baguette with accompaniments.

3. Peach Oolong Yule Log Cake (PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering)

Lime on the Go from Lime Restaurant at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering brings the best and sweetest imaginations from their innovative desserts kitchen straight to your home. Their collection of Festive Goodies featuring Yuletide desserts is available from 15 Nov 2022 to 1 Jan 2023.

This Peach Oolong Yule Log has me dreaming of a white Christmas. No, really. The pristine white colour aside, it looks like a bunch of snowmen having a grand old party!

Fortunately for us, the Peach Oolong Yule Log contains more than just plain, tasteless snow. White is the theme as white chocolate mousse, white chocolate Feuilletine and the freshest, springiest vanilla sponge create more luxurious flavour than their most colourful counterparts.

The Oolong flavour in every decadently extravagant bite doesn’t come from just any tea but fine Oolong leaves from TWG. The highlight for me was the peach jam, which gave this classic Yule log an exquisite touch.

While the Peach Oolong Yule Log was our favourite, the other 2 log cakes also made an impression. Visually, the striking scarlet hue of the Cherry Pistachio Yule Log is a prelude to the flavourful ecstasy of cherry marmalade infused with amaretto liqueur, pistachio sponge, mascarpone mousse and white chocolate feuilletine that awaits inside.

If you are a fan of classic favourites, the Chocolate Pear Yule Log will easily top your list. Sitting atop a crunchy hazelnut base, the supremely soft chocolate sponge ensconces a voluptuous medley of pear confit and dark chocolate.

5. Lychee Champagne Tiramisu Log Cake (Cedele)

Call it ‘Sir-dell’ or ‘Sir-dell-ee’, you’re going to have to call Cedele’s Christmas desserts line-up absolutely fantastic.

Our favourite was the Lychee Champagne Tiramisu Log Cake (S$75). It was incredibly light and soft and the touch of Champagne was just perfect. Together with the lychee compote and whipped mascarpone cream cheese, this was one of the best festive cakes I’ve ever tasted.

Cedele Blackforest Block Cake

Imposing and seductive, the newly-minted 9-layer, 7-inch BlackForest Block cake (S$95) is 9 decadent layers of chocolatey mousse, kirsch cream and morello cherry compote. The ‘fence’ of chocolate shards ringing the cake really look like forest trees, too!

Right there from Day 1, twenty-five years ago, the Flourless Chocolate Log Cake (S$65) has stood the test of time and taste. It is moist and tender, though baked with organic unrefined sugar. The log of chocolate truffle in the middle is a chocolate lover’s fantasy.

Cedele Strawberry Maple Mascarpone Tart

Not just cakes, there are festive tarts on the Cedele menu, too. Our pick is the Strawberry Maple Mascarpone Tart (S$72) of maple-sweetened mascarpone cheese and strawberry compote in a nutty almond crust, all with a roof of fresh strawberries.

If there’s time for tea, there should be time for biscotti, too. Cedele’s Biscotti tin (S$32 for 1, S$60 for 2) contains 7 pieces each of the twice baked crunchy wonders in Pistachio Almond & Rosemary Sea Salt, Mexican Chocolate Walnut and Cranberry Almond flavours.

6. Triple Chocolate Christmas Tree Cake (LUNA)

One of the most successful homegrown artisanal patisseries, LUNA prides itself on its aesthetically pleasing, delicate desserts. Their pair of 2022 Christmas specialities align perfectly with that philosophy.

The first is Triple Chocolate Christmas Tree Cake (S$82), shaped and coloured to invoke images of the snow-dusted conifers synonymous with the festive season.

Far from being just aesthetically-pleasing, this is a masterpiece both inside and out. Three layers of chocolate— bitter dark chocolate mousse, sweet caramel milk chocolate mousse, and tangy yoghurt and cream cheese white chocolate— sit atop an almond sponge and crispy feuilletine base. Paradise!

Perfect as a gift, the Sweet Celebration Christmas Set (S$39) is a collection of 4 festive treats available only as part of this set. The Hazelnut Paris-Brest, Coffee Chestnut Tart, Orange Cherry Pistachio and Apricot Pear Bauble are each a wonder of creativity in their own right, and absolutely spectacular together.

7. 3D Entremets (Alice Boulangerie)

Homegrown but internationally-renowned Alice Boulangerie makes our list with a stunning series of four 3D entremets that are veritable pieces of art. We don’t use that term lightly— here are the photos to prove it.

Alice Boulangerie

First on the list is Acorn (S$13), a hyper-realistic creation that would probably fool a chipmunk. Its deep brown shell is 70% dark chocolate. Removing it and unveil the treasure within: layers of chocolate mousse, yuzu crémeux, almond dacquoise and almond walnut praline with salted caramel mousse.

It’s time to fool the Smurfs next. Mushroom (S$9) favours a local palette, using gula melaka Chantilly cream and coconut pastry cream complemented with gula melaka caramel built around classic choux puff.

Striking notes of calamansi crémeux with lime jelly, lime cream cheese and pistachio dacquoise complement mascarpone mousse to create the bright and sunny Summer Cheese (S$10).

Geometry meets abstraction in Cocoa Ananas (S$10). Manjari (64% chocolate) chocolate mousse, flourless chocolate sponge, salted crumble base and pecan brownie come together in a spiral of bittersweet chocolate and pineapple compote.

Alice Boulangerie’s festive series also includes a new design of the bi-coloured viennoiseries for which the brand is known. Mixed Berries and Coconut (S$7) is white chocolate-glazed pastry ensconcing coconut pastry cream, berry compote and fresh berries. House-made marshmallows and red velvet crumble complete the enticing look.

This collection is available in-store from 13 Oct 2022 in limited quantities.

What’s Christmas without log cake? Alice Boulangerie puts a mesmerisingly creative twist on the classic with Alice’s Christmas Log Cake (S$85). Taking pride of place on the log is a 3D orange dark chocolate mousse squirrel. The log itself is moist chocolate flourless sponge layered with chocolate mud biscuit, fruit crémeux, caramelised banana and hazelnut praline crunch.

9. Claus is Comin’ (Swensen’s)

It would be a surprise if Swensen’s didn’t make the cut on a list of sweet treats. The desserts specialist has a long list of sweet bombshells to unleash for Christmas.

Get right into the holiday spirit with the all-new Claus is Comin’ (S$12.63) that blew us away with its extraordinarily creative concept. Coming at you are 3 scoops of festive-themed ice cream— Biscoff Cheesecake, S’mores and non-alcoholic Tiramisu ice cream, so even the kids can enjoy.

Swensen's Turkey Crackles

Turkey Crackles (S$15.84) is another treat created just for Christmas 2022. A turkey drum-sticky of Sticky Chewy Chocolate ice cream tops this cup of indulgence that contains a flood of crunchy coco rice drenched in cold fudge.

Swensen’s also has a range of Christmas Ice Cream Cakes and Log Cakes.

The all-new Speculoos Holiday ($48.00, 500g) is a Biscoff Cheesecake with Speculoos ice cream topped with milk chocolate ganache, fresh rosemary and walnut. I went to town with this one— the sweet, sticky ganache is truly irresistible.

Sweet and simple Merry Giftmas (S$59, 1 kg) is the all-time favourite Sticky Chewy Chocolate Ice Cream. Enchanted Holiday (S$59, 1 kg) is Black Forest Ice Cream and Chocolate Ice Cream topped with dark cherries, transforming a classic flavour to modern tastes.

10. Dark Cherry Meringue Log Cake (Awfully Chocolate)

There are log cakes and then there is the Dark Cherry Meringue Log Cake (S$88) from Awfully Chocolate. It may be at number 10 but it’s a perfect 10 in our books (and mouths!). Hidden inside the exquisitely intricate finish that makes you not want to not cut it (after a while, my chocolate greed won out), there is dark chocolate diplomat and sour cherries to infuse a sophisticated tang.

At 9″ and 560g, it’s just right for 8 to 10 people… or 2 to 3 people like me. Now’s the time to order this slice of paradise— rom 15 Nov to 6 Dec 2022, all pre-orders of the Dark Cherry Meringue Log Cake will come with a free pint of Awfully Chocolate’s Dark Chocolate Hei Ice Cream. This promotion will continue while stocks last.

The Yuletide Praline Cake (S$113) is perhaps the only contender from Awfully Chocolate that tempted me nearly as much as the Dark Cherry Meringue Log Cake.
8″ and weighing 2.6kg, this cake was made for sharing its gold-dusted blackberry and bay leaf Christmas toppings. Orders of the Yuletide Praline Cake are also eligible for the free pint of chocolate promotion.
