Chiung Yao wants to educate society about euthanasia

4 Aug - Taiwanese writer and TV producer Chiung Yao couldn't help but to tear up when talking about her new book and mentioning about her ailing husband, Ping Xin-tao, who is currently under the care of his three children from a previous marriage.

As reported on CNA, the famed writer who appeared at the press conference of her new book, "Before Snow Falls: The Last Lesson of My Life", shared that her book is not just about her relationship with Ping, but also to convey the message of how everybody is entitled to be released from life in a dignified manner.

"I am not writing a novel. This is a true story," she said.

Chiung, who took care of Ping after he was diagnosed with dementia and suffered a stroke back in 2015, was forced to give up care to his stepchildren, after they went against her wishes to perform euthanasia on Ping.

Saying that she had no bad intention when she chose euthanasia, Chiung explained, "I think the best love I can give to Ping is to let him die in peace. Prolonging one's life by medicine is cruel. The ultimate love is to learn to let go."

The writer also shared that she went to visit Ping at the hospital recently to tell him that she has finally published her book, but was saddened to see how frail he has become.

When asked if she was affected by the protests from her stepchildren regarding her new book, Chiung said that she is not writing for them, but for the society, so that they can further understand the subject of euthanasia.
