Chip and Joanna Gaines Have BIG News

Chip and Joanna Gaines have big news: Magnolia Home is expanding into exteriors. The Fixer Upper stars chatted with Woman's Day ahead of the release of The Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection of siding — here's everything to know, including how the designs came together, and where you can shop the full product line nationwide.

"It's a beautiful collaboration, with construction and design," Joanna says of the partnership with James Hardie, a leader in fiber cement home siding and exterior design solutions.

When it came to curating the color palette for the classic siding products, styles, and textures, Jo says: "I thought about the styles of homes that we've done over the last 20 years. I love that there's different styles that people can choose from. It's not just your traditional horizontal lap siding (which I love because that I feel like is classic and timeless). You've also got the board and batten and you've got the shingle siding, depending on what style that you love for your home's exterior."

The siding is painted, and Joanna says she was "crazy intentional" when selecting the 16 colors in the collection. "I wanted it to be small, because I really wanted to minimize all the decisions and options that a lot of homeowners are faced with when they're tackling a project of this size," she explains. "Natural tones, earthy tones — I feel like those stand the test of time. Hopefully when the homeowner is seeing these colors, they're not overwhelmed by options, but a few of them really speak to them, and from there they can feel the boldness to just go for it."

Chip Gaines, who joked with us about getting his "scandalous side of the story out," shares how excited he was personally to embark on this journey with Joanna and James Hardie.

"I have been a partner with Jo through this entire experience. It felt like we both became equally famous simultaneously through the show Fixer Upper that we were both a part of. We were 50-50 partners. That's the way it was," he begins. "But yet, once the thing sort of became a thing, and people took note of it, only you got phone calls as it related to people who were interested in partnering," Chip playfully teases Jo.

"He was looking for, like, the 2x4 partnerships, the drywall partnerships," Joanna adds. "So of course, when James Hardie called, Chip was..."

"I jumped right out of my socks," Chip finishes. "I was so excited." He goes on to joke about how, "This started off as like a 90/10 partnership between me and James Hardie. 90% me!"

It may have been a hit to Chip's ego (hey, we can play around too!), but luckily for the average homeowner, the colors and designs are not only beautiful and simple, but the intentionally curated product line aims to make the entire process feel that much more accessible.

In all seriousness, Chip says that, "It shouldn't be too overwhelming. I hope it's not; I hope it's a series of kind of logical and practical steps that leads clearly to one or the other options — and the fact that you've got three styles and not 30 and the fact you've got 16 colors and not 100, I hope that this is an enjoyable process for a consumer as opposed to an overwhelming experience."

"I think it's taking our 20 years of experience and saying, 'This is what worked best for us.' Not only with the Hardie siding, these styles, but also these colors, and hopefully that alone will help them feel confident in their investment," Jo stresses.
