Chip Gaines Says He's Passionate About Passing This Trait Along to His Kids

Chip Gaines recently helped renovate a youth baseball field as a part of his partnership with Bobcat. We had the opportunity to sit down with the Fixer Upper star as he took a break from his very special demo day, and it became clear that he's a passionate guy. Chip's enthusiasm is evident whether he's talking about his hometown of Waco, Texas; his work; and, perhaps most significantly, his family.

Chip and his wife, Joanna, are proud parents to five children, ranging in age from 6 to 19. The family of seven lives on a 40-acre farm with more than 100 animals, so there's plenty of work to be done. And, according to Chip, he and Joanna are "very passionate" about including their kids in the farm chores.

Chip explains that he and Joanna learned from the best: Their fathers. He said, "We are passionate about hard work. [My father and father-in-law] are well into their mid-seventies, and they still mow their own grass. You see them working on their own landscapes. These are not pompous individuals that have people do these types of things for them."

He continues, "That was kind of the environment that me and my sister grew up in. It was definitely the environment that Jo and her sisters grew up in. And Jo and I are passionate about passing on that legacy. We tell our kids all the time, 'You're not going to be great at everything, but you are going to be the hardest worker.' When you talk about hard work, their granddaddies emulate it, their mom and I emulate it, and they're going to carry on that legacy."

Drake, Ella, Duke, Emmie, and Crew all have chores at home. Chip admits that, for his teenagers, it can be "a bit like pulling teeth." But 6-year-old Crew mirrors his dad's enthusiasm. Chip says, "My 6-year-old wants to go out and get the eggs, wants to be a part of mowing the grass, wants to be a part of everything. He's pretty giddy about the whole experience."

We love to see that at the Gaines house, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
