Chin Han in Crazy Rich Asians: Will it happen?
Singapore’s very own Chin Han has a big role in Ghost In The Shell, which opens here on March 30. But during our interview with the 48-year-old earlier this month, we took the opportunity to ask him about the next big Hollywood project for Asian stars: Crazy Rich Asians, based on Singaporean author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel. Might our highest profile Singaporean representative in Hollywood be in the movie?
After all, there are only so many Asian stars in Tinseltown, let alone someone from our neck of the woods who has worked with the likes of Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard. And is it too crazy to ask that a movie with Singaporean characters have, well, Singaporeans in it with – dare I say it – Singaporean accents?
So we posed the question to Chin Han: Will he be in Crazy Rich Asians? Have the producers sounded him out?
“(laughs) One of the producers is someone that I worked with on Marco Polo, and I know some of the people involved with the production. I wish them the best in the production but…I think this movie is about young people, about the next generation, so I’ll leave them to have their fun.”
Boooooo. But the fact that a producer of the Netflix TV series Marco Polo is also a producer on the movie set off alarm bells in our heads, because so many Asian actors have featured in it, including a certain Michelle Yeoh, who has already been cast in Crazy Rich Asians.
Just check out the IMDB listing of the full Marco Polo cast, which includes prominent Asian stars such as Benedict Wong and Joan Chen (who also starred with Chin Han in the Singapore-set HBO series Serangoon Road), as well as our own Tan Kheng Hua. While we reckon that Chin Han was indeed sounded out for the movie, we figure that the abovementioned actors will all be contenders for Crazy Rich Asians.
