Cheung King Wai's first feature film joins BIFF

5 Sep - Hong Kong filmmaker Cheung King Wai's first feature film, "Somewhere Beyond the Mist" (also known as "Opus 1"), will be Hong Kong's first entry to BIFF's New Currents Selection after seven years.

As reported on Oriental Daily, the director, who is known for his award-winning documentaries, shared that he is happy that his first ever attempt at making a fictional movie is going to be Hong Kong's representative title at the Busan International Film Festival.

Said Cheung, "The opportunity to bring - to the big screen - a script that was written 16 years ago, and remain true to myself at the same time, I have no regrets. The rest is just a bonus to me."

However, the director said that he is extra delighted to be able to join the competition, especially when Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone is the head of the jury.

"He is one of the few directors who can be a "non-mainstream" in the mainstream. He is my role model," he said.

Inspired by a true event that happened in Hong Kong in 2013, "Somewhere Beyond the Mist" tells the story of a pregnant policewoman (Stephy Tang), who found herself developing a rapport with a murderer who killed her parents.

The movie will also be competing against nine other entries including China's "One Night on the Wharf" and South Korea's "Last Child".
