While many millennials are looking to move into their own homes, local actress Chantalle Ng is starting small - moving into her own bedroom.

Yes, Ng has been sharing a bed with her mother for the last 28 years, and finally decided to get her own room.

The 28-year-old first made the announcement on Threads a week ago where she wrote, “I've been sharing the same room as my mum for the past 28 years. It's been a habit to chitchat before we go to bed.

“Recently I feel like my late hours are starting to disturb her sleep and I've decided to move into my own bedroom!”

However, Ng shared more details while speaking to 8world about her upcoming drama All That Glitters.

In an article published on Wednesday (19 July), she said, “I really like talking to my mother before I sleep, telling her about my day, occasionally playing card games and we’ll sleep when we’re tired. It’s been our routine for many years.

“But, I’ve been coming home late recently because of work and my mum sleeps early - she sleeps before 10pm - so I’ll disturb her sleep. And she gets up very early and when she does, she disturbs my sleep.”

Despite not being able to get a proper rest, Ng confessed that she didn’t want to sleep apart from her mother. After all, both mother and daughter relied on each other through the years.

Ng is the daughter of veteran actress Lin Meijiao and former actor Huang Yiliang. She previously told host Quan Yi Fong that Huang’s temper created a tense relationship between them.

She said she would get “terribly nervous” before their weekly meeting and he once caned her so badly that she was hospitalised and it became a police case.

The actress told 8world, “I really want to be around her (my mother) more, talk to her more and not stay in my room the moment I’m home. Although, at times, she thinks I’m disturbing her.”

Ng shared that her mother had previously hinted for her to move back to her room but she pretended not to hear it.

That said, the turning point came when Lin went on a three-day cruise and Ng realised that sleeping alone could be so enjoyable.

As she isn’t getting enough sleep regularly due to work, Ng is more aware of the importance of getting quality sleep by entering into the deep sleep stage of the sleep cycle.

Deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, supports memory, growth, and cell regeneration. If you don’t get enough, it may contribute to some health conditions, including heart disease and Alzheimer's disease.

“Aside from getting blackout curtains, the room must have a very comfortable chair so I can read books all day,” she said.
