The ‘Cat Person’ Movie Is Finally Here (Sorta)Hearst Owned

There was a different time, many moons ago (six years), when a story from The New Yorker could go truly viral. The story in question was called "Cat Person," and it was basically the only thing the internet cared about for a full week. The writer Kristen Roupenian told the story of a girl named Margot, who met a guy named Robert, who was much older than her. They started something of a relationship over text, and when they hung out in real life, things got a bit weird. When Margot eventually rejects Robert, it doesn't go well, and the essay sparked a whole debate-with-a-capital-D about modern dating and the ways we treat each other.

The essay was eventually optioned for film in 2021, with Susanna Fogel attached to direct, and there was a lot of curiosity about how the short story could be adapted, especially considering so much of the story takes place inside Margot's head. People finally got their answers at this year's Sundance Film Festival when the movie premiered. Here's everything you need to know about the movie and how you can watch it.

Who's in the movie?

Nicholas Braun (of Succession and Sky High fame) plays Robert, and Emilia Jones, who was in last year's Best Picture winner CODA, plays Margot.

Some other notable names who joined the cast: Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Michael Gandolfini, Liza Koshy, Fred Melamed, Isaac Cole Powell, and Isabella Rossellini.

Does it stay true to the essay?

Hm, this is a tough question to answer without spoiling the movie, but because of the challenges of adapting a short essay, the filmmakers decided to make it more of a psychological thriller. So the third act of the movie is not based on material in the essay. A lot of critics didn't love the changes, but if you haven't read the essay before, you probably won't mind because you won't know the difference!

When can I see it?

The movie premiered at Sundance last week, and the purpose of premiering it at a film festival is, in part, because the movie is for sale and needs distribution. So as of now, it doesn't have a distributor, which means there isn't any info about a release date yet. There will probably be news about that really soon. We'll update this post as more information becomes available. Until then, I'll leave you with this:
