Captain Phasma Will Return for 'Star Wars: Episode VIII,' Gwendoline Christie Says

Maybe Captain Phasma survived the destruction of the Starkiller Base after all?

Gwendoline Christie told People magazine at this weekend’s SAG Awards that the chrome-domed Stormtrooper she played in Star Wars: The Force Awakens officially will be returning for the franchise’s next film. That answers a major question left by director J.J. Abrams’s smash hit, which seemed to have left Phasma in the First Order’s massive base when the Resistance’s X-wing pilots destroyed it.

Whatever role Phasma plays in director Rian Johnson’s follow-up, it’s got to be bigger than her part in The Force Awakens: The boss baddie was one of that film’s most highly anticipated additions — especially when it came to merchandise sales — but she had little to do with what went down on-screen. Other than blasting a few people on Jakku and hanging out on a Star Destroyer, her main function was being forced to help former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) as he infiltrated Starkiller Base.

If this isn’t a flashback, and she indeed survived the destruction, chances are that she’ll be looking for some revenge. Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
