If you can’t own a hamster, there is always an alternative – mochi
In Japan, if you can’t stretch to taking care of a live pet hamster, you could – as one Twitter user showed – rear a “pet” mochi instead.
In the Twitter post seen below, one of the pets is named Daifuku and the other, Mamedaifuku. And yes, they are not hamsters but rather, mochi (sweet rice cakes) in a cage. What a strange world we live in huh?
名前は左が大福
右が豆大福です⸜(* ॑꒳ˆ * )⋆*❤︎
一匹だと寂しいかなって思ったんですが二匹だとこのゲージだとちょっと窮屈かな?この種類初めて飼うので(´•ω•`) pic.twitter.com/uGBbiGDYEa— ペットを飼い始めたふぉるて (@uzuki_26) June 6, 2018
According to the pet owner, having just one would be lonely. So why not have two of them? After all, two is better than one, right? This is also the tweeter’s first time having this “species”.

In the post above, she even put it on her hand and tried “feeding” it! We are not sure if you would consider this as “cute” – but you might.
Despite the weirdness and lack of reason, Japanese netizens decided to join in the fun and chip in some words of advice for this “amateur”:
“I heard this pet runs fast. Please take note during this season.”
“It seems they become hard when they’ve grown weak.”
Among the comments, some went to the dark side and expressed their desire to devour them because they look too cute. Others joked, “The hamsters nowadays have evolved to become so much like daifuku.” There are indeed some that really look like a soft mochi, though.

The best reaction of all? When the pet owner’s mother texted and asked if it was okay to eat them.
大福と豆大福無事でした!!

Thank god they are both fine! But we are not sure how long they can last. They might have entered someone’s stomach already, or were “abandoned” in the rubbish bins when they have grown “weak”.
