Camila Cabello has started her tenure as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, and this week, one contestant made the “Señorita” singer do a double (ear) take.

During Tuesday’s show, 29-year-old Tanner Howe took the stage to perform “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes, aka Camila’s ex (the couple split in November 2021 after more than two years of dating). And suffice to say, Camila was shocked when the contestant started belting out the lyrics.

“Is that my…is that Shawn up there?” she questioned as she smiled and pointed back toward the stage. “I thought that was Shawn!” she exclaimed to fellow coaches Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, and John Legend.

Tanner’s performance earned a chair turn from Blake, Gwen, and John but not Camila. “Tanner, congratulations. You’re on The Voice,” she cheered once he wrapped his audition.

“I was like, ‘Is Shawn onstage right now?’” she reiterated. After Tanner affirmed that she “knows him best,” Camila agreed. “I know him better than everybody in this room,” she said.

The “Bam Bam” artist then shared her reasoning for not turning around, and yes, it was the sweetest nod to both the contestant and her ex. “I felt like you sounded a little bit too much like him,” she explained. “Obviously, he has an amazing voice. I love this song. But I would be curious, when you pick your coach, for you to just kind of distinguish yourself.”

Tanner remarked that he sees himself in Shawn’s “lane,” to which Camila replied, “I was in his lane deeply.” Okay, now we’re blushing. 😳

“She said it, we heard it,” Blake joked.

The contestant ended up choosing Team Gwen, but you can check out the entire incredible audition and Camila’s reaction for yourself below.
