Call the Midwife has revealed the big secret of how the cast manage to keep the younger members of the cast on set entertained in between takes.

The popular BBC drama took to Instagram to share some adorable behind-the-scenes photos from the most recent episode, one of which shows Roxanne Palmer, akak Joan Wrigley, keeping one of the children amused.

After posing the question of how, the caption reveals that all-important answer: "The answer is, as every good (or bad) parent knows — to pull a funny face! Roxanne had a whole hat full of young stars to keep amused, and did it with some style." Adorable!

We're guessing the trick comes in pretty handy too, as there are plenty of young actors around the set of the beloved BBC One series.

Funny faces weren't the only methods of entertainment for the cast and crew though, as Judy Parfitt (aka Sister Monica Joan) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) had their own ideas as the clip revealed they enjoyed a sneaky ice cream on set.

Giving fans some further context behind the episode with a snap of Nurse Crane sat at her dressing table, the caption of the Instagram upload continued: "Nurse Crane certainly had her work cut out last night, with moments of contemplation to reflect on the bad turn things had taken for her."

But it sounds like their sneaky frozen treat didn't go unnoticed, as the captioned added: "Mind you, smuggling ice creams into the clinic without including us is definitely CROSSING A LINE!" Too true.

Call the Midwife airs on Sunday nights on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
