California gym tests out inventive social distancing measure: 'We are prepared'

A California fitness center has debuted a creative way of enforcing social distancing protocols while allowing for a safe reopening.

Peet Sapsin, owner of Inspire South Bay Fitness in Redondo, Calif., told KTLA that his gym has constructed personal workout “pods” out of shower curtains and pipes as a cheaper alternative to plexiglass dividers.

The pods, which are set up 10 feet apart and took approximately three days to build, each come equipped with a set of weights and a workout bench. They include personal sanitation items and will also be fully cleaned between uses.

The gym says it is taking additional measures to ensure client safety, including having guests sanitize their hands and check their temperature upon entry. Attendance will also be limited to nine people at a time — nearly half the gym’s capacity.

“Reopening our gym @inspiresouthbay is not an easy task,” Sapsin wrote on Instagram. “But we are prepared to increase the safety for all of our members against COVID-19.”

Sapsin, who told In The Know he and his wife dreamt up the pod concept together, said that after the first trial run, all participants “loved it.”

On June 6, California released guidelines for fitness establishments reopening this month, listing stringent rules in regards to decreased capacity, social distancing, employee conduct, helpful signage and cleaning methods.
