Since releasing her cutting-edge single and music video exclusively on YouTube and Weibo on 9 December, global C-pop star, fashion icon, and philanthropist Tia Lee 李毓芬 (Lee Yu Fen) has been riding high on its success. In response to the unprecedented support, she announced the #EmpowerHer campaign that will support fellow females and directly benefit women in Singapore.

Racking up 10.3 million views on Weibo within just 24 hours and over 26 million views on YouTube within five days, Goodbye Princess has been setting new records even beyond the C-pop sphere. The first-ever C-pop song to be produced by Swizz Beatz, the Grammy Award-winning producer for global icons like Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Madonna, and Britney Spears, it continues to take the world by storm with over 52 million views on YouTube and counting.

For the production of the Goodbye Princess music video, Tia and her team also pulled out all the stops by pairing up with Actual Objects, an experimental multi-disciplinary studio based in Los Angeles that designs and curates unique aesthetics for renowned brands and artists such as Nike and Travis Scott.

Inspired by her personal journey in the music and entertainment industry, the video follows an animated Tia moving through a hyper-pop fantasy world, where she is shown to be breaking free from all the constraints she was previously bound by. In essence, Goodbye Princess is a celebration of female strength and Tia’s metamorphosis into the woman she is today – ready to take the world by storm.

To hype up its release, the video was preceded by a ground-breaking episodic series which incorporates various fairy tale princess themes through a mix of animation, music, and fashion videography to reflect Tia’s previous journey in the entertainment industry. Helmed by critically acclaimed animation director Sunny Tang (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and award-winning British creative director Tony C. Miller, the series broke 100 million views in less than a month, making it the most successful pre-release campaign by a C-pop artiste to date. All episodes are available to watch via the Goodbye Princess episodes playlist on Tia’s official YouTube channel.

Tia pairs up with Singapore-based charity Daughters of Tomorrow, in the wake of Goodbye Princess success

In keeping with the themes of her latest hit and women supporting women, Tia also launched the #EmpowerHer campaign, through which up to HKD 3.8 million (approximately USD 480,000) – a nod to International Women’s Day on 8 March – will be split between selected charities. Each time a viewing benchmark is met on YouTube, a donation will be made on her fans’ behalf to help empower women around the world.

One of the first charities that Tia is supporting is Daughters of Tomorrow (DOT) in Singapore, a charity that sets out to facilitate livelihood opportunities for underprivileged women, support them in achieving financial independence, and enable social mobility for their families.

"Daughters Of Tomorrow is delighted to be the benefiting charity for the launch of Tia Lee's Goodbye Princess and the #EmpowerHer campaign, which seeks to inspire, uplift and empower women. This resonates with DOT's mission of empowering women through economic means, enabling them to uplift their families,” said Fannie Lim, Executive Director of Daughters Of Tomorrow.

“We recognise that every person has their own journeys – milestones to check, circumstances to overcome, and aspirations that they wish to live for. Recognising that everyone has dreams of their own, our role is to cheer each one towards creating a better tomorrow for themselves."

Goodbye Princess goes viral worldwide, as top TikTokers in Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and UK lead the charge with #EmpowerHerDance

In response to the #EmpowerHer campaign, dancers around the world have risen to the challenge of covering the infectious choreography to Goodbye Princess, which features energetic yet rhythmic full-body movements and a signature ‘goodbye’ hand gesture. Tagged #EmpowerHerDance on TikTok, the upbeat and unabashedly feminine moves embody Tia’s newfound freedom to express her own strength after overcoming past challenges in the industry.

Among the earliest to take part was globally renowned Australian-Filipino dancer and choreographer, Hannah Balanay – Australia’s most popular creator on TikTok last year. She is best known for her dance to Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now, which went viral on the platform. Judah Metu-Teaukura, Leen Mohammed, and JLou (ranked #1 in New Zealand, the Middle East, and Hong Kong respectively) as well as Evie Meg (ranked #2 in the UK) have also jumped on the #EmpowerHerDance bandwagon, generating an unprecedented number of views and likes globally in support of the #EmpowerHer movement to date.

Tia moves forward with her roots firmly planted in fashion and modelling

When Tia is not busy dominating the C-pop world or working to support women’s empowerment, she can regularly be seen inspiring others through her style, gracing the covers of the most respected publications in the fashion industry, recently appearing on the cover of Vogue Hong Kong.

As excitement around Tia continues to build, her fans can expect even more music, content, and collaborations sooner rather than later. Dressed from head to toe in Burberry while talking to UK fashion and music magazine Rollacoaster recently, Tia teased that she was currently working on her “next surprise” in Seoul – the ultimate hub for trendsetters.

After the Goodbye Princess campaign, she is more ready than ever “to experiment”, as clearly demonstrated through the sound, production, and personal style risks she has been taking. Undoubtedly “one to watch” in 2023, be the first to keep up with Tia’s latest updates on her Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Weibo accounts.
