Britney Spears TV Movie In Works At Lifetime; Natasha Bassett To Star

Lifetime has greenlighted Britney (working title), a two-hour TV movie about Britney Spears starring Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar!) as the pop icon. Production begins next month in Vancouver for a 2017 premiere on Lifetime.

The project details the tumultuous story of Spears’ rise to fame, her fall from grace and eventual triumphant resurrection. It will follow Spears’ story, beginning as a young girl from Louisiana trying to make a name for herself in the music scene, her relationship with fellow pop singer — and one-time Mickey Mouse Club castmate — Justin Timberlake and her private life crumbling after the divorce of her parents and her tabloid breakup with Timberlake. Her personal behavior soon eclipsed her pop icon success as a quickie marriage to a childhood friend and later an ill-fated marriage to dancer Kevin Federline, became tabloid fodder. With her life spiraling out of control, Spears lost custody of her sons and was placed under her father’s conservatorship. But despite her past troubles, Spears has battled back to rebuild her career.

Spears “will not be contributing in any way, shape or form to the Lifetime biopic nor does it have her blessing,” a representative for Spears told Deadline in a statement.

Britney is produced by Asylum Entertainment for Lifetime. Steve Michaels, Jonathan Koch and Joan Harrison are executive producers. Leslie Libman (Manson’s Lost Girls) directs from a script by Anne-Marie Hess.

The movie and Bassett’s casting were first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
