As any VMA historian would tell you, Spears’ performances are the stuff of legends, from her snake-charming rendition of “I’m A Slave 4 U” in 2001 to her big kiss with Madonna in 2003. That said, her last appearance at the VMAs — a low-energy performance of “Gimme More” in 2007 — isn’t held in such high esteem.

So the pressure was on for Spears to reclaim her title as Queen of the VMAs… and reclaim it she did:

Dressed in a sparkly gold number, direct from her Las Vegas show, Spears battled giant shadow puppets to the tune of her latest hit “Make Me.” She was joined halfway through the performance by collaborator G-Eazy, whose other current hit — “Me, Myself and I,” featuring Bebe Rexha — got a surprise cover from Spears.
