Simple Plan tease S’pore crowd all night long
"I don't have a Singaporean girlfriend."
And so went the familiar refrain all night long as Canadian pop punk band Simple Plan playfully teased and toyed with a mainly young, frisky crowd at the Fort Canning Park on Sunday night.
Local band Brandon Lee opened the show before the five-member Simple Plan kicked off the concert at about 8.25pm with the catchy track "Shut Up" from the "Still not getting any" album.
From then on, the Montreal band never looked back, putting up a highly energetic and exhilarating concert for their fun-loving fans.
"You guys look like a bunch of party animals. I want everyone to jump with me" shouted lead vocalist, Pierre Bouvier before introducing the next track, "Jump" from the band's latest album.
The band cleverly arranged the song with Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" to get the party started, and soon enough sparks flew.
"I love Singapore and I think this is probably the cleanest country in the world," Bouvier said even as fans shrieked back, "We love you too."
Following which, the band introduced an up-and-coming DJ Funky C who was in town before playing "Addicted" and "My Alien", both from their debut album released in 2002.
But the highlight of the night went to bass guitarist David Desrosiers who cheekily lamented, "I don't have a Singaporean girlfriend."
Fellow rhythm guitarist Sebastien Lefebvre played along and replied, "I've got a girlfriend here. She is somewhere there (pointing at the fans to his left)."
Female fans raised their hands in unison and screamed their lungs out hoping the duo would call them up to the stage. Sadly for them, that didn't happen.
The band rocked on with "You Suck At Love" and "Thank You" before Desrosiers playfully asked again, "Where is my Singapore girlfriend?" even as adolescent female fans edged closer to the stage.
The third studio album finally got featured when the band launched into "Your Love Is A Lie" before more playful teasing.
"It's really hot tonight. I see that everybody is sexy and sweaty, standing close to one another," Bouvier teased.
"Anybody got a cell phone? Whip it out and I want all of you to be my stars because we are taking a trip to outer space. This song is called astronaut," he shouted and concert goers sang along to the track taken off the latest album.
"I am so horny right now," Desrosiers hollered right after the song ended.
"Who wants to go the beach with me?," he asked. "Be careful. I always like to get naked," he paused for effect as deafening screams rang all around Fort Canning.
"Who'd still want to go?" he continued. "All right, close your eyes now. I'm going to bring all of you to a 'Summer Paradise'," before smiling and playing the band's latest single.
A medley of Cee Lo Green's "Forget you", Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" and Pink's "Raise your glass" ensued.
This was followed by their most popular single from their latest album, "Jet Lag", which was released in three versions (English, French and Mandarin) collaborating with Natasha Bedingfield, Marie-Mai and Kelly Cha respectively.
Desrosiers carried on with his mischief and asked, "I am really sweaty right now. Who wants to shower with me?"
He joked with the audience that this would be a good start for his new local girlfriend before ending off the first set with "Welcome to My Life" and "I'd Do Anything" to close out the 90-minute concert.
The band saved "Loser of the Year" and their first-ever song as a band "I'm just a kid" for the first encore, before saving their chart-smashing hit "Perfect" for the rousing finale.
Wahidah Korevli, a 21-year-old admin assistant, was among the fans who lapped up every minute of the sweaty but uplifting concert.
Revealing she had queued overnight since 9pm the previous night to get the best spot right in the front row, she told Yahoo! Singapore, "I love Simple Plan for their music and how they have remained consistent over the years. This is the kind of music that I fell in love with."
Currently on tour for their fourth studio album, "Get your heart on!", this was the band's sixth visit to Singapore.
Speaking to Yahoo! Singapore before the concert, drummer and percussionist Chuck Comeau said, "It's great to be back again in this gorgeous city. We love the great weather, good-looking people, Asian food and awesome fans."
Right back at you.
