Hits, misses at the Social Star Awards red carpet

Social media's biggest stars gathered in Singapore to honour the most popular in cyberspace Thursday night at the Marina Bay Sands' MasterCard Theatres. While some brought their A-Game to the awards, others were either too blah or too garish. Read on for our style breakdown.

HIT
Psy

By now, K-Pop superstar Psy has sealed a look he can call his own: a tuxedo sans tie, with exposed cuffs, shirt buttoned to the top and some garish shoes. "Look classy, dance cheesy" is exactly what Psy did on the red carpet. Donning a dusty purplish jacket with pagoda shoulders and no lapels, Psy pairs it with a crisp white shirt, black-and-white oxfords and his signature side-swept hairdo. He looks as effortless as he does when he is busting out the hip-thrusting moves of "Gentleman" and the hand-lock of "Gangnam Style".

HIT
Carly Rae Jepsen

Finally, someone is telling 29-year-old Carly Rae Jepsen to dress more like her age. No more flashy neon jackets and rompers from this sweet Canadian lass: Jepsen dons a black Viktor Luna dress with a sheer-and-leather bodice that shows off her toned belly and a floor-length skirt, appropriate for an awards show. Her red locks are teased out into wavy curls and her bangs are nicely curled inwards. Two things Carly should have left behind: her garish John Hardy gold bangle and her Desla Couture headband which channels "Tumblr hipster queen" rather than "pop sensation trying to grow up".

HIT
Aerosmith

There is absolutely no way these rockers are doing any Botox to their wrinkly faces. After all, why would they? They are rock stars. Instead, Aerosmith does what they do best: dress up in their devil-may-care attitude and some choice numbers. Vocalist Steven Tyler appears in what looks to be a vest one size too small and an assortment of necklaces, with his locks of hair flowing down. These fellas do not need to dress to the nines to show some attitude: they have already gotten it in their swagger.

HIT
Eric Benet

The R&B star shows how to turn up to an awards show looking classy: a grey tuxedo with black lapels and a tie bar seal this look. Benet amps up the douchebag factor a tad bit by wearing sunglasses in an indoor space but keeps his cool with some shiny loafers. His pants would look much better if it were tapered a bit more to show off his slim figure -- the leg looks one size to big. Benet has got to do something about the hair though: carrying the Esplanade on his head is not doing him any favours.

HIT
Amanda Lepore

Say what you want about how extremely over-the-top this transgender icon looks like, but only one person has the confidence to carry off such a classic old-Hollywood look (and then some). Lepore accentuates her assets in a daring low-cut number that leaves nothing to the imagination. Her bold lip colour and luscious locks of wavy hair amp up the old-world charm. The sparkly dusty purplish dress highlights her scarily-thin waist but also shows off some gorgeous hip action. If there is one thing that Lepore should have left in her hotel room, it would have to be those arm-length gloves which shorten her already-minute stature.

MISS
Blush

This sexy five-member girl group definitely have got the charm turned on, but this ensemble ends up looking more like a getai performance than one for the awards shows. The dresses look great for a fun night out with the girls at the clubs, but if we have learnt anything from previous awards shows, nothing above the knee is classy enough for a red carpet. One shimmery dress is okay; put five together and you have a recipe for disaster. The heavy eyeliner ads to the garish look. These girls deserve better stylists if they want to have a shot at making it internationally.

MISS
CeeLo Green

Did this artiste forget that he was supposed to walk the red carpet? Gone were the flashy outfits fans were accustomed to seeing him in previous performances and appearances as a judge on the United States' version of The Voice. Instead, Social Star Awards attendees only saw him baring his chest hair in a loose black long-sleeve top that covered his hands and some similarly-uninspiring pants. Even his shoes are yawn-inducing: silver pins could not save the white loafers from looking blah. At this rate, many could probably forget that Green exists in the first place.

MISS
Jessica Alba

We expected much more from the object of every male teenager's sexual fantasy. Instead, Alba appeared on the red carpet with a dated white mid-length sheer-panel dress that barely highlighted her figure and some stilettos that make her look shorter instead of elongating her frame. Alba might have spent a bit too long in the tanning salon, judging by her orange complexion. Her hair looks immaculate though, if at least a tad bit too bouffant at the ends for her oblong face shape. This look could have been much more sexier and current, but instead, Alba sadly looked like a has-been.
