How You Can Spend Valentine’s Day With Nick Offerman And Megan Mullally

Separately actors Nick Offerman ("Parks and Recreation") and Megan Mullally ("Children's Hospital") are comedic forces to be reckoned with. Together they make up one of Hollywood's most likable and entertaining power couples.

So how would you like to spend your Valentine's Day or weekend with them? Here's how: Check out their sweet, funny, gem of a high school comedy "Date and Switch," in which they play parents of two high school best friends (played by Nicholas Braun and Hunter Cope), one of whom comes out of the closet just before prom.

Yahoo Movies recently spoke with the two stars about their fun and funny new movie via separate phone conversations which occurred within minutes of each other. Mullally phoned in on her way to the airport and a few minutes later we were patched through to Offerman who was on a break from work on "Parks and Rec." Did they answer the same? It's almost like "The Dating Game: Celebrity Valentine's Edition."

What makes this movie perfect for Valentine's Day viewing?
Megan Mullally
: It has a great message, I don't know if anybody cares about that but I also really like the three lead actors, that's the reason to go. They're really good and really appealing. I think the chemistry they have together is great and they improvised a lot, they came up with a lot of funny stuff on their own. The script was really funny to begin with but I think audiences will like them, too.

Nick Offerman: The story is at heart so romantic and filled with warmth, surrounded by a really funny movie. That's what first attracted us to the script. My friend Alan Yang ("Parks and Recreation") wrote it and I thought it was such a warm take on a high school romantic comedy, except it changes from boy-girl to boy-boy. I personally appreciated how it attacked that subject matter in a very human way, there's no stereotypical behavior, it's sort of a deconstruction of a typical romantic comedy. It sort of says to the audience, if your friend is trying to get kissed in high school it doesn't matter who they're trying to get kissed by, it's really the same for everybody.

"Parks and Rec" fans might be surprised to see you without your signature 'stache, is that a conscious effort on your part, Nick?
N.O.
: Ever since the popularity arrived for "Parks and Recreation," as a character actor I said, "Okay for the next several years everything I play I'll try to make him look as little as possible like Ron Swanson" and so when we shot "Date and Switch" that was what was available to me. I had to keep the hair but the timing was such that I didn't have the mustache, I put on a pair of glasses. The last thing I want to do in a movie is bring to mind another character I do on a show and I wanted that dad to be softer than the guys I play with a mustache.

Megan, what's your stance on that now-famous mustache? Do you have a facial hair preference?
M.M.
: Yeah, I like both. When I met him he didn't have a mustache but then he grew one right away because he was doing a play and wanted to have one for it. I've seen him with every possible hair configuration known to man, everything. Like a white mohawk wrapped over his ears and then under his chin, under a chin beard, that was trouble but he's fearless. He had a shaved head and a mustache when we first started dating. He has a very robust thicket of hair.

We all love seeing you two onscreen together, but here Megan is married to Gary Cole ("Office Space"), he seems fun to be around.
M.M.
: [Laughs] I've known Gary Cole since like 1980, I knew him when I was doing theatre in Chicago and he was there at the same time doing a lot of theater. So I used to see him around a lot and all the girls that he rampaged. He settled down now.

N.O.: Oh sure, meet that guy at 25-years-old and you're in a world of mischief. Yeah I'm very excited to see Megan and Gary Cole [onscreen together], I'm such a big fan of his. He was sort of in the class ahead of me in Chicago, he's always been a legend to me and every time I see him work I learn something new.

M.M.: My husband has the funniest scene in the movie though, his son is watching gay porn to figure out what it's all about and he comes in and thinks his son is gay, it's really good.

N.O.: The scene is absolutely scripted, we might have taken liberties with the things we said but everything I did in the movie was very respectful of Alan's script. When you're writer is as good as he is you try not to mess with it too much.

What do you think your spouse would say is your idea of a perfect Valentine's Day?
M.M.
: We just like to be together. Honestly if we just stay home with the dogs and watch a good movie, nothing violent, something nice, and just be together. This Valentine's Day we're going to be in Austin together and he's taking me out to a nice dinner in Austin but we like to keep it simple. Sometimes we go to Venice, California, and just wander around and have dinner, just simple stuff.

N.O.: We love to stay home and not make a big deal out of things like Valentine's Day or New Year's Eve. Her perfect Valentine's Day would be a nice dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and then a quiet evening together which for us if we can just stay home and watch a movie, that's like being in Hawaii. So that would be my guess. The older we get the less we like to go out and make a big to-do. I'm a very lucky S.O.B., we still feel like newlyweds.

What's the secret to going to work with your spouse?
N.O.
: We hear from a lot of other couples that they could never work with their spouse the way we do and I guess the main thing to working together and maintaining our happy relationship in general is always having a sense of humor with one another and our situation. I don't know, for me personally my wife, I sort of hold her as a comedy hero on a list with John Cleese, Mel Brooks, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Megan Mullally, the big five. So getting to work with her for me is a great privilege, I mind my manners just like I do with any great performer, I put my head down and try to do my best so that they won't think I'm an absolute boob.

We're pretty sure you've proven yourself at this point.
N.O.
: Well you don't want to get lazy, got to keep your eye on that brass ring.

"Date and Switch" is now in theaters and On Demand.

Mullally/Offerman Bonus: If you happen to be in Austin, TX this weekend get tickets to see Mullally's band Nancy and Beth perform with a special appearance by Offerman. The event, in his words: "I'm going to do some flapping of the gums and her band is going to play and we'll play some stuff together and hopefully the audience will have a great time," said Offerman. "I know that I have a great time when she's on stage with her band, I'll see if I can't keep up with them."
