New resto-bar to try: Kuro

The concept restaurant in Clarke Quay makes the perfect chillout spot for post-work drinks.

If you happen to be in Clarke Quay and are searching for less-than-usual fare, know that there’s a new restaurant in town – and it’s doing something a little different to get your attention.

Kuro (“black” in Japanese) in Cannery Block C is the only place in Clarke Quay which has Asahi beer on tap, for starters. It also ups the casual dining experience with Western and Asian bar snacks created by chef Hide Yamamoto (formerly of Marina Bay Sands). Think colourful and decadent bites like Tofu Avocado Salada, Shisamo Goma, Kanpachi Carpaccio Sashimi and Rainbow Sushi Roll.

Pair these with even more drinks – their impressive menu offers a variety of other beers, wine, whisky and cognac. Try their Japanese whisky Nikka; it’s available in 12- to 25-year-old editions.

Helmed by Krisz Sim, an industry veteran and former restaurant manager of establishments like Hard Rock Café, Balaclava and KPO, Kuro has also been given the star treatment with its interior. An elegant mix of industrial, old world and modern, it features dark wood décor that’s been recycled from Good Shepherd Cathedral on Queen Street. The bar’s outdoor seats were repurposed from its pews, while the walls and table tops were built using the church structure’s wooden planks.

Don’t worry if you want to bring a lot of friends along. The 4,000 square foot eatery can accommodate 230 patrons, and includes an outdoor area and two exclusive areas for private events: Cage, a raised-fence space for 30 guests, and the VIP room for 10 which comes with sofas, karaoke and its own restroom.

Kuro also has a stage, and will have bands like Tabula, Energy, Fuze Collective, Full Circle, Shirlyn & The UnXpected, Live Conclusions and Enigma performing. At Kuro, you can choose whatever way you wish to relax.
