‘Black-ish’ Star Yara Shahidi Talks Being ‘Overlooked’ as Young Talent

Teen Vogue hosted its 14th annual Young Hollywood bash in Malibu Friday night, drawing budding film, TV, music and digital talent.

Young stars including Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Troye Sivan, and “Black-ish’s” Yara Shahidi gathered at Malibu’s decked out Reel Inn to celebrate youth, individuality and the successes of their industry peers.

“This event celebrates the young talent that’s sometimes overlooked,” Shahidi told Variety. “Often times in this industry you hear, ‘Oh you’re great, but you’re just a kid.’”

Many on the Young Hollywood guest list are on the brink of stardom and thus still adjusting to life in the limelight.

For up-and-comer Lana Condor, rising fame hasn’t thrown her for any major loops just yet.

“What’s surprising is my life hasn’t changed,” she said. “I attend these events, but then I go home and watch Netflix.”

Attendees mingled over alcohol-free cocktails, appetizers, a DJ set featuring current and classic throwback hits and a custom denim bar, presented by American Eagle Outfitters. Instagram also debuted activations at the get-together, which had stars like Rowan Blanchard, Kaia Gerber and Shahidi glued to the social site’s video booth.
