Best free fitness activities in Singapore – free gym, free yoga, free run & more

Want to keep that New Year’s resolution to get fit? Getting in shape doesn’t have to cost a cent in Singapore– there are free fitness activities such as free yoga classes, no-cost running clubs and even free gyms all around you.

We have put together some of the best free fitness options in Singapore for the careful spenders who want to keep their bodies slim and their wallets fat. No more excuses!

Free Gyms

Most gyms offer free trials, usually ranging between 4 weeks to 3 months. However, the true free gyms in Singapore are the varied outdoor gyms found in housing estates. I used to disregard them when I was younger on the assumption that they were ‘for old people’.

When I paid closer attention, I realised that while some of the free gyms cater to elderly folk, there are many that will give the fittest among us a good workout.

The best thing about these free public gyms is that they are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No matter what your schedule is like, there is a free outdoor gym near where you work or live that’s calling out to you.

Free Fitness Classes

Some of us need the motivation of working out in a group. If you fall into that category, here are 2 excellent free fitness options.

1. Free Fitness Classes – Quick HIIT

The first is the Quick HIIT classes by Singapore Sports Hub designed for a range of fitness levels. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) involves short bursts of high-intensity exercises that burn calories and build muscle quickly.

These free fitness classes are conducted by professional certified trainers who lead the pack through full-body workouts consisting of callisthenics and bodyweight exercises. It’s an effective way to target your core as well as upper and lower body muscles.

Best of all, lessons start at 7pm, so you can probably get there after work. You can register on the Healthy 365 app available for download from Google Play or the App Store.

Yes, I had to look those names up, too.

Free Yoga Classes

Despite its gentle nature, yoga has proven to be an excellent addition to any fitness regime. Several organisations, both government and private, offer free yoga classes in Singapore but here are 2 that are more faithful to the traditional practice of yoga.

1. Nikam Guruji Yoga Kutir

Founded in Mumbai in the 1960s and active in Singapore since 1997, Nikam Guruji Yoga Kutir is one of the oldest Hathayoga schools here. All their yoga classes are provided completely free of cost across 18 centres and have benefitted over 32,000 participants.

Their basic free yoga course consists of 12 weekly sessions that go for 2 hours each. Registration is required and requires just an email expressing your intent to participate. Once you have completed the basic course, you may still attend weekly 90-minute refresher classes online via Zoom.

You can find the complete list of dates, locations and registration requirements for both the basic yoga and refresher courses here.

2. Singapore Sports Hub Yoga

A calm descends on the Singapore Sports Hub Lawn Bowls field on alternate weekday evenings. They organise 3 types of free yoga classes– Vinyasa Flow, Hatha Yoga and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Yoga.

Vinyasa Flow is a low-intensity workout that incorporates cardio and strength training. It improves your endurance and stability while focusing on intentional breathing.

Hatha Yoga takes you through a series of physical postures and breathing techniques to improve strength and flexibility. It helps you understand your body and begin to move more effectively and efficiently, improving your posture, self-awareness and confidence.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Yoga brings together the best of both worlds for an energetic full-body workout interspersed with slow-flow stretches to relax your muscles.

You can find the complete list of times and locations here.

6. Running

Once upon a time, I used to run every single day, no external motivation needed. Now, the thought of pounding the pavement isn’t as appealing unless there are other people involved. If you share the same dilemma but no one in your circle is a runner, a running club is the answer. Otherwise, nothing’s stopping you from hitting the asphalt by yourself right today.

Singapore Runners Club is a Facebook group with 14,000 members. What I like about them is their diverse range of running formats. They conduct track interval training at SUTD Stadium and Bukit Gombak SportsSG Stadium as well as Long Slow Distance (LSD), Trail & Tempo runs around Singapore.

You can find more details here.

7. Cycling

As with running, cycling can be both a solo or group sport. Cycling as a free fitness activity exploded during the COVID era where it passed as a convenient ‘excuse’ to be out and about while getting fit. The government responded with an increase in the number of tracks and Park Connectors and today, you can get to every corner of Singapore from every other corner with pedal power.
