Beloved Taiwanese star Chu Ke-liang dies at 70

Popular Taiwanese star Chu Ke-liang died from liver failure at age 70 at the National Taiwan University Hospital, reports said on Monday (15 May).

Family members of the beloved multi-tainer (comedian, actor, host, singer) announced his passing in a post on Facebook, saying that he “passed away peacefully” on Monday morning at about 5am.

The post also reads, “Thank you to all the fans of Chu da-ge who have given him so much support and recognition throughout his career. This is a sad time for all of us. The illness that has trapped him for so many years will no longer bring him pain and suffering. To all the fans, even though he has left us, please keep him in your memory and give him your blessings to make people laugh in heaven.”

According to Taiwanese reports, Chu was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2014, and his condition took a turn for the worse last month when the cancer spread to his liver. Doctors also had to refute rumours of his death circulated by the tabloids last week.

Chu, whose real name is Hsieh Hsin-ta, is known for his distinctive blunt bob hairstyle and his quirky sense of style. He was also one of Taiwan’s biggest TV stars in the 1980s.

He was married four times and leaves behind two sons and three daughters, one of which is well-known Taiwanese singer-actress Jeannie Hsieh.
