While we could (and will) get into the technology and eco-credentials of the Beautyrest Harmony Lux, the proof is in the sleeping: this reviewer got some fantastic shut-eye on this hybrid mattress, which combines pocketed coils and multiple layers of memory foam.

Over the testing period of three weeks, there was no sagging at all, and the Harmony Lux stayed ultra-supportive. Although our primary tester and their partner both tend to sleep hot, neither one experienced any overheating. We also didn't notice any active cooling, per se, but the mattress felt temperature-neutral. Edge support is excellent, but our testers did notice some minor motion transfer.
We tested the Exceptional Coral Island version of this mattress, which provides additional cooling and memory foam over the less expensive Premier Anchor Island model.

We selected the Firm Pillow Top version of this mattress, which we found extremely firm. Even the pillow top itself was firm, not plush feeling at all. This is the sort of mattress you sleep on, not sink into. If that's your preference, this works perfectly - though if it's not, Beautyrest's wide range of customization options mean you can get precisely the level of softness you're looking for.
The sleep surface of the mattress is made from recycled plastic bottles collected by hand from coastlines before they end up in the ocean. In fact, a queen-sized mattress contains up to 100 discarded plastic bottles.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux falls roughly in the middle of the company's range. At $2,199 for a queen-sized mattress, it's not exactly cheap. Considering the market as a whole, that puts it in the upper mid-range bracket.
For the money, you do get a slightly better delivery experience than most mattresses within this price range. This doesn't arrive rolled up in a box and dumped on your porch; rather, this more upscale hybrid mattress gets placed right into your bedroom with Beautyrest’s white glove delivery service. This service also includes removal of your old mattress.
You can sleep on the Harmony Lux for 100 nights to decide if it's right for you and, if it’s not, Beautyrest offers you the opportunity to return the mattress hassle-free for a full refund. Additionally, the mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty.
Like many mattresses, the Beautyrest Harmony Lux is often on sale. As we write, Beautyrest has launched their 4th of July mattress sale A queen mattress is currently $1,799, which is $400 off, or about 20% off the retail price of $2,199. We’ve seen it drop as low as $1539 at Macy’s.
Currently there is a similar sale on the cooling hybrid Casper Snow mattress, which is running for $1,995 (as opposed to the regular price of $2,495) for a queen mattress. The top-rated Saatva Classic might be the best option yet, currently $1,795 for a queen which retails for $2,095.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress review: Materials
It's fair to say that Beautryrest has thrown just about everything at this mattress. Its pocketed coils are double-stranded to add extra support and (in theory) provide strong motion isolation.
Next comes three layers of foam which Beautyrest calls 'InfiniCool MAX', designed to help with active cooling, followed by a thick layer of 'ActiveResponse' memory foam for pressure relief, and a layer of carbon fiber-infused 'RIGHTTEMP' wave foam for yet more support and coolness.
That's a lot of branding, but Beautyrest does generate its foam from a plant-based formula and, neatly, create its sleep surface by recycling plastic bottles which might otherwise have made it to the ocean. This surface is deceptively soft to the touch, and an optional quilted pillow top provides a lifted feel and a bit of softness to the mattress.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux, specifically the higher end Coral Island model we've tested here, comes in four levels of firmness: Plush Pillow Top, Medium, Firm Pillow Top, and Extra Firm.
We tested the Firm Pillow Top model. It lives up to its name, as we found this to be both quite firm yet comfortable at the same time. While some mattresses require a breaking-in period, this seemed set from the start, offering a consistent feel throughout the three-week testing period.
This is the sort of mattress you sleep on rather than sinking into. We expected that the pillow top would be cushy, but it really isn't. Perhaps we should have believed Beautyrest’s website, which explains that the firm pillow top is more for a lifted feel than for plushness.
Of course, the intersection of firmness and comfort is highly subjective. As a general rule, heavier bodies need more firmness for comfortable support. Additionally, firmer mattresses are recommended for stomach and back sleepers, while softer mattresses are recommended for side sleepers.
So does the firmness here work? Between your reviewer (a side and back sleeper) and her husband (a stomach sleeper) we tested all combinations, and both slept well.
To our medium to smaller-sized bodies, the Harmony Lux offers plenty of support, both in the center of the mattress and around the edges, whether lying or sitting, and we felt our bodies were aligned properly while sleeping. A slight difference of opinion as regards specific comfort, though: the stomach sleeper finds this to be just about the perfect mattress, comfort-wise, but your reviewer wished that the pillow top was, well, more pillowy.
Beautyrest makes a lot of claims about coolness. Neither tester has any issues with this mattress, despite usually sleeping hot. It does not trap body heat in any noticeable way.

Stays cool to the touch

We tested a king size, firm pillow top, Coral Island version of the Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress for three weeks. We tested in all major areas of performance, such as pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, cooling, and ease of setup.
We can’t yet speak to durability, given that the review testing period was three weeks, but the build quality and materials seem to be excellent and we anticipate that this mattress will last for a long time.
Set-up
White glove delivery is included in the price of the Beautyrest Harmony Lux. We arranged for delivery via text and the company arrived well within the delivery window. The delivery people removed our old mattress and set up the Harmony Lux efficiently and completely.
We didn’t have to deal with any packaging, since the delivery folks removed it before putting the mattress on the bed and took it all with them when they left. The setup process could not have been easier.
The mattress is intended to go directly onto a base. However, we placed it on a box spring and it worked fine on that as well. The company did not make any suggestions about airing out the mattress before using it, so we placed the bedding on the mattress right away, which didn't seem to cause a problem.

Off-gassing
Beautyrest mattresses are CertiPUR-US-certified, which means that they have been certified safe from harmful chemicals, ensuring better indoor air quality. CertiPUR tests foams to ensure that they are free from formaldehyde, ozone depleters, phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.
Certified mattresses must also have Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality, less than 0.5 parts per million. And they are screened for harmful chemicals (including flame retardants) that are classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins.
Your reviewer, who has a very sensitive nose, did not sense any off-gassing smell of any kind. That's probably unsurprising, because the Beautyrest Harmony Lux is delivered fully-inflated, as it were, rather than in a compressed-from-the-factory vacuum-sealed roll. The mattress had clearly had enough time to air itself out before it reached our bed.

Pressure relief
We tested the firm pillow top mattress. To simulate a person’s body weight sinking into the mattress while sleeping, we placed a 15-pound weight in the center of the mattress, and measured 1¾ inch sinkage.
Both the primary and secondary tester definitely felt both aligned and supported on this firm mattress. There's very little contouring, even considering the pillow top.
We do note a slight feeling of pressure on the hips when side-sleeping for a long period. This isn't painful, and we woke up feeling good, but it is enough to trigger a change of position in the night.
We don't feel any sort of pressure when back-sleeping, nor at the shoulders or knees when sleeping on our side. Our secondary tester, who sleeps mostly on his stomach, feels no pressure at all and finds this mattress to be ideal.
This isn't bad, but it's worth noting that mattresses that have a plusher pillow top or a thick layer of memory foam, like the Casper Snow, can offer more contouring and pressure relief.

Motion transfer
Motion transfer refers to what happens when your sleeping partner moves around. Do you feel it enough to disrupt your sleep? Ideally, motion transfer should be low, and motion isolation should be high.
If you have a restless or fidgety sleeping partner, this measure is especially important. This mattress scores right about in the middle, bearing in mind that your reviewer is of the “princess and the pea” persuasion and quite sensitive to motion.
To get a more objective measure, we conducted a drop test. This involved placing a wine glass in the center of the mattress and dropping a 15-pound weight at varying distances from the wine glass to see if it tips over.
First, we dropped the weight just four inches from the wine glass, which simulates a sleep partner moving around very close to you. At this distance, the wine glass fell right over. Next, we dropped the weight ten inches from the wine glass, simulating the motion of a partner moving a bit farther away. Again, it fell over.
Finally, the weight was dropped 25 inches from the wine glass, which simulates a partner getting out of bed on the opposite side from you. At that distance, the wine glass jiggled but it did not fall over.
This is a decent performance for a sprung mattress, but a foam-topped mattress is likely to do a bit better with motion isolation. Our experience with the Casper Snow found that to be the case.

Temperature regulation
When mattresses trap body heat this can cause you to sleep hot, which is a major sleep disruptor. Foam mattresses often trap body heat and sleep hot unless they include cooling technology.
The Beautyrest Harmony Lux is a hybrid mattress, but it is designed to keep cool thanks to a special layer which Beautyrest calls InfiniCool MAX. This is plant-based and it contains cooling foam and surface cooling fibers.
Although both testers tend to sleep hot naturally, this mattress feels very comfortable, temperature-wise. While it doesn’t feel like it's directly cooling (or even cool to the touch, per se) it does a great job at heat dispersal.
We used microfiber sheets and a microfiber duvet, both designed to sleep cool, and sleepwear is generally a similar fabric for cool sleeping. The bedroom temperature during testing was moderate, usually around 68 degrees.
To be fair, this is not an unusual result, as modern mattress technology seems quite good at heat regulation in general: none of the mattresses tested by this reviewer have had heat-trapping issues.

Edge support
There are many reasons why edge support is important in a mattress. It lets you spread out while you sleep and utilize every square inch of the sleep surface, or sit on the edge of your bed comfortably while you put on your slippers, for example.
It also gives you good support for getting in and out of bed, and can prevent premature sagging around the perimeter of the mattress. It's never good to lie in bed and feel as if you're going to roll off the side.
The Beautyrest Harmony Lux has excellent edge support, better than some of the other mattresses your reviewer has tested in the past. We can sit on the edge comfortably without slipping off, get in and out of bed easily, and feel supported even when sleeping right up to the edge of the bed, never feeling as if we might fall out.
Despite a little wobbliness in terms of motion transfer, that firm support is maintained even when someone else gets in and out of bed on the other side of the mattress.
To test edge support more objectively, we placed our 15-pound weight right at the edge of the bed. The weight sank in just 1 ¼ inches.

Durability
While our testing period was only three weeks, the materials seem to be excellent quality, and we're confident that this would last well.
This isn't always the case. Over the testing period, there has been no sagging (like we noted when testing the Stearns & Foster Estate mattress) or ripped stitches (like the Dreamfoam Essentials mattress.) The mattress still looks like new, even after two people slept on it for three weeks.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress review: User reviews
On Beautyrest’s website, the Harmony Lux earns a 4.5 rating out of five stars with 303 reviews. Macy’s and JCPenney take their ratings from Beautyrest’s website.
At Wayfair, the particular mattress we tested rated 4.2 out of five with 17 reviews. Ratings on Wayfair come from a third party called Bazaarvoice Review, and many of those reviews were collected as part of a promotion.
The reviews on the Beautyrest site (which mix of all the different Harmony Lux variations, not just the Firm Pillow Top version of the Coral Island line) are generally very positive. Most reviewers rave about how comfortable the Harmony Lux mattress is, and how they wake up feeling rested. One reviewer of the exact model we tested in particular raved about its excellent back support and cooling effect. Some reviewers did complain that the firm models (including the Coral Island Firm Pillow Top we tested) are just too firm for their liking.
Amongst Wayfair's reviews of this specific model, positive reviews raved about the support, good night’s sleep, lack of pain, less tossing and turning, cooling, and motion isolation.
One user put it in the Goldilocks zone, referring to it as not too soft, not too firm, just right. Another called it a piece of heaven. Negative reviews mentioned the height of the mattress, making it difficult to find sheets that fit properly. There was a complaint of the mattress being too firm, and one user mentioned a lingering bad smell.
Should you buy the Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress?
The Beautyrest Harmony Lux - particularly the Coral Island Firm Pillow Top version we tested - is a great mattress overall as long as you're comfortable with its specific comfort makeup.
We don’t recommend this version for people who prefer a plusher mattress style, but it’s great for people who prefer the support of a firm mattress with a slight pillow top. It'll suit back sleepers, stomach sleepers, larger bodies, hot sleepers, and people who are concerned for the environment.
It's extremely supportive, including around the edges, and its foam makeup is works to keep you cool at night or, at least, it doesn't trap body heat and make you hotter. The use of recycled plastic bottles is a nice touch - doubly so because it doesn't feel like plastic at all, it feels like luxurious fabric. And we loved the convenient white-glove delivery service and old mattress removal.
If a firm mattress isn’t for you, the Beautyrest Harmony Lux comes in so many different firmness levels, you can surely find the one you like.
There are negatives. The price point isn’t great, for example, though we still think the quality means this is decent value, especially if you can find it on sale. Sensitive we may be, but we also found that motion transfer was middling.
Overall, though, we do recommend the Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress if you’re looking for a high-quality hybrid mattress.
