Bea Alonzo to star in new movie about the Battle of Mactan

8 Aug – Bea Alonzo is set to star in an upcoming Filipino-American production titled, "1521: The Battle of Mactan".

As reported on Variety, the actress will be playing the role of Diwata, a princess of Mactan in the movie that will be depicting the historic titular battle, the outcome of which is the departure of the Spanish crew from the archipelago of the Philippines.

Her character is set to have a forbidden romance with Spanish soldier and Magellan translator, played by Hector David Jr.

The two will also be joined by Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, who will play Diwata's sister Ahmani, alongside Michael Copon, who will not only direct the movie, but also plays Lapu-Lapu, the datu (chief) who killed Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan.

The role of Magellan will be portrayed by Hollywood actor, Danny Trejo.

Principal photography is set to begin in Palawan this month, with the release date tentatively scheduled for June 2023.
