Watching the Barbie film over the weekend brought up some of my childhood memories of playing with the doll with my sister when I was younger. Gosh, they were some of the best moments in my life; I even remembered Dad taking us to a mall on Orchard Road in the early '80s, when he got us a Barbie car and accessories. Everything was pink and a delight! Of course, there was also what we dubbed weird Barbie – all bumped up, her hair snipped and her face drawn on with markers – the result of my younger's sister rage when we fought and wouldn't share our dolls.

But back to Barbie. Since its opening weekend, the film garnered over US$162 million in domestic US theatres over three days, surpassing director Greta Gerwig's expectations. And thanks to the marketing machine, we're also seeing pink everywhere in town! While some of us are relishing our memories of Barbie, we may want to caution parents about bringing young kids to watch the film as the film has been given a rating of PG13 here in Singapore.
