Late Barbie Hsu's ex mother-in-law bows on TikTok

18 Feb - Internet influencer and entrepreneur Zhang Lan recently surprised many recently when she decided to bow down to her fans on TikTok Live.

Zhang, the former mother-in-law of the late Barbie Hsu, moved to TikTok recently after she was kicked out of its Chinese version Douyin over recent issues surrounding Barbie's passing.

In a recent video, she addressed her followers by reading their messages and letters, and said that the messages are her fuel, that reading them cheered her up and encouraged her.

She then stood up and bowed 90 degrees to the camera, saying, "I am also a woman. Although I have experienced ups and downs, I have been in this industry for more than 30 years. I used to be the helmsman, and now I am a sailor, but I have not forgotten my attributes, my social attributes and my responsibilities. Thank you, my fans, you are my fuel."

It is noted that Zhang (as well as son Wang Xiaofei) lost her account following the recent backlash, after she liked a rumour on social media saying that her son paid for the flight that was taken by the Hsu family to bring Barbie's ashes home to Taiwan. Barbie's sister Dee had to release a statement denying this, saying that the family paid for the charter themselves.

Wang, enraged by what had occurred, announced that he is severing his ties with his own mother.

Zhang later sparked another controversy, when Barbie's mother Huang Chun-mei posted a cryptic message about going to the battlefield to seek justice for Barbie. Zhang seemed to hint about Huang's post in her video soon after, saying that, "Only fools would play tricks every day," prompting netizens to slam her for picking a fight with a mourning mother.
