Balenciaga’s New $1,150 Sneaker Is Covered in Staples
More from Footwear News
Balenciaga has made a reputation in recent years for its chopped-up and pre-dirtied spins on athletic footwear, and the French luxury label is continuing to dial up the distressing with its latest sneaker release.
Dubbed aptly, the Balenciaga Stapler Sneaker dons a familiar look with a 2000s-era running shoe aesthetic. But instead of only using the extra-exaggerated proportions often found on Balenciaga sneakers — of which there are plenty here — the Stapler Sneaker adds new flair in the form of literal staples attached all over the shoe. The staples cover nearly the entire sneaker, connecting portions of the synthetic paneling and even appearing on the midsole and throughout the bottom.
Additional distressing, which Balenciaga describes as a worn-out effect, includes scuff-like marks on the upper and abrasion on the midsole. While not as chunky as some of the brand’s recent sneaker output, the sole protrudes slightly and the rubber outsole curls up at the toe and heel. An offset asymmetrical lacing further adds to the unique design.
The Stapler Sneakers are constructed free of leather, using only polyurethane and polyester on the upper and EVA and rubber on the sole. Branding includes Balenciaga’s unity sports logo on the heel and tongue pull tab, new stapler logo branding on the tongue and Balenciaga text on the heel, insole and toe. Shoe sizing is also displayed on the front of the rubber toe, a signature detail of the label’s sneakers.
While distinct for its staple-adorned design, the Stapler Sneakers aren’t as boundary-pushing as some of Balenciaga’s other footwear. In April, the brand introduced the viral 10XL sneaker with a greatly oversized sole.
The Balenciaga Stapler Sneaker comes in men’s and women’s sizing. Men’s colors include beige/gray, black and white/pink/neon yellow/silver, while women’s styles are beige/gray and gray/blue/pink/neon yellow/white. All styles retail for $1,150 and are available now from balenciaga.com and select Balenciaga stores.
